Overview
Mangetsu Miyoko is a primary guest heroine appearing in the anime film Doraemon: Nobita's Great Adventure into the Underworld and its remake Doraemon: Nobita's New Great Adventure into the Underworld. Resident within an alternate reality created by the What-If Box where magic exists, she is the daughter and research assistant of Professor Mangetsu, an astronomer who predicts an impending demon invasion. A few years older than Nobita Nobi and his friends, Miyoko acts as a courageous guiding figure, standing bravely against evil forces to protect both her father and the realm.
Appearance
Miyoko is a beautiful young woman with short hair who wears a distinctive outfit reminiscent of a lotus flower, along with a pendant around her neck. In the remake version, it is noted that she styled her hair short after her mother's passing. Under the influence of a demonic spell, her physical form changes into that of an animal—initially a mouse and subsequently a cat, taking on feline ears and a tail while cursed.
Personality
Miyoko possesses a pure, sincere, and resolute demeanor. Even when facing grave danger, she demonstrates incredible fortitude, prioritizing the safety of her companions above her own through acts of self-sacrifice, such as acting as a decoy. Because her father's theories were shunned by society, she harbored a quiet sense of isolation. This background makes her profoundly grateful toward those who stand by her, showing exceptional warmth, affection, and loyalty toward Nobita Nobi after he fulfills his promise to help her.
Abilities
Inheriting high talent from her father, Miyoko is a skilled magic user. She can draw out various magical implements, including a sword used as her primary weapon, directly from her pendant. She possesses the skill to pilot a flying magic carpet for transportation and acts as a guide by deciphering the ancient text known as Makai Rekitei. In the remake manga, she is explicitly mentioned to be unskilled at alchemy.
Background
Miyoko lived alongside her father, Professor Mangetsu, assisting his astronomical research in the alternate magical world created by the What-If Box. When demonic forces invaded to prevent her father from stopping their planet's approach, her father was captured and Miyoko was struck by a transformation curse. Using Doraemon's Translation Connyaku to communicate while in animal form, she sought out Nobita Nobi and his friends after identifying them through a prophecy. She led the group on a flying carpet to the Demon Star to defeat Demon King Demaon and restore peace.
Relationships
Miyoko respects her father, Professor Mangetsu, whom she supports as an assistant. She forms a deep bond of mutual trust with Nobita Nobi, feeling genuine fondness for his bravery when he journeys to rescue her. Doraemon assists her with Translation Connyaku so she can speak while transformed, and in the remake, he shows affection for her cat form. She also travels alongside Takeshi Goda, Suneo Honekawa, and Shizuka Minamoto, developing a strong camaraderie with the entire group during their perilous mission.
Trivia
Miyoko starred as the protagonist of a spin-off side-story novel titled Makai Daibouken Gaiden: Miyoko no Magical Wars, published in Doraemon Club magazine in 1994. Furthermore, she appears as a playable party member during the Underworld chapter of the Famicom RPG Doraemon: Giga Zombie no Gyakushū.
