Overview

Moro is a character from Studio Ghibli's animated film Princess Mononoke. She is a three-hundred-year-old giant wolf god who acts as the protector of the Forest of the Deer God. Capable of human speech, she possesses high intelligence and extraordinary vitality. Although she harbors deep animosity toward the humans who destroy the forest, she raised San, a human child abandoned by her parents, alongside her own two offspring.

Appearance

She is a giant wolf over five meters long with white fur. Her most distinctive physical feature is her two tails.

Personality

Despite her intimidating presence, Moro is a calm, highly rational, and intensely maternal deity. While she despises those who harm the forest, she can speak composedly and reason logically with individuals who show respect for nature. However, she harbors an unyielding hatred and relentless vengeance toward Lady Eboshi, dreaming of crushing her head.

Abilities

Moro possesses high intelligence and fluent human speech. Her physical strength and sheer vitality are extraordinary, enabling her severed head to briefly revive and bite off her enemy's arm even after death.

Background

When humans abandoned the infant San as a sacrifice, Moro chose to spare her, raising her as her daughter alongside her two biological pups. She passed on human speech and knowledge to San while defending the forest. Moro spent her remaining time plotting the demise of Lady Eboshi. In the story's climax, she saves San from being consumed by Okkoto and entrusts her to Ashitaka. Though she succumbs to her wounds, her severed head manages a final attack to sever Eboshi's arm before dissolving in the Deer God's liquid.

Relationships

Moro deeply loves her adopted human daughter, San, raising her alongside her two biological wolf pups. In the past, she was romantically involved with the boar god Okkoto. She maintains a fierce deadly enmity with Lady Eboshi, the leader of Iron Town who threatens her forest home.

Trivia

Her forceful command telling Ashitaka to be silent became one of the most famous and widely remembered quotes from the film. The story and official background materials leave the existence of her former male partner completely unspecified.
