Overview

Totoro is the main titular character of Studio Ghibli's classic animated feature film My Neighbor Totoro. Residing in a colossal camphor tree within the sacred forest of Tsukamori, he is an ancient forest spirit who has protected the natural realm for over a thousand years. Normally invisible to adults, he reveals himself only to pure-hearted children. Throughout the story, he forms a magical bond with young sisters Satsuki Kusakabe and Mei Kusakabe. With his towering height and endearing presence, Totoro serves as the iconic mascot of Studio Ghibli.

Appearance

Standing well over two meters tall, Totoro has a wingless silhouette resembling a giant owl. He is covered in thick, fluffy grey fur with a beige underbelly patterned with grey chevron arrow markings across his chest. His head features pointed, arrow-like ears, large round eyes, six long cat-like whiskers, and a wide mouth lined with flat, mortar-shaped teeth. He possesses sturdy bear-like paws and a large, plush tail reminiscent of a raccoon dog.

Personality

Totoro is extraordinarily gentle, easygoing, and completely devoid of malice toward humans. Despite his intimidating size and booming roar, he possesses a childlike sense of wonder and playful excitement. He delights in simple sensory experiences, such as the rhythmic patter of rain falling onto an umbrella. Most of his time is spent sleeping peacefully in his hollow tree trunk, maintaining a calm, reassuring demeanor that invites trust from young children.

Abilities

Totoro possesses mystical capabilities rooted in nature. He can instantaneously grow simple seeds and acorns into towering trees through a ceremonial ritual. For locomotion, he balances atop a giant spinning top to fly effortlessly through the night sky. He can travel fluidly between dreamlike states and reality, and often climbs to the top of tall trees at night to play melodies on an ocarina. Additionally, he can emit a powerful, echoing roar that resonates throughout the forest.

Background

Believed to be between 1,300 and 3,000 years old, Totoro is an ancient guardian of the forest. Lore suggests he is a surviving spirit from prehistoric eras who weathered conflicts between ancient gods and humanity, or one of the last remaining members of a legendary species. Throughout history, he interacted subtly with humans, learning pottery during the Jomon period and mastering spinning tops during the Edo period. In the mid-20th century, he resides inside a massive camphor tree in a rural village, intersecting with the human world when young Mei Kusakabe tumbles into his lair.

Relationships

Mei Kusakabe is the first human child to encounter Totoro, giving him his famous name after interpreting his sleepy roars. Her older sister, Satsuki Kusakabe, forms a deep bond of mutual respect with Totoro after lending him her father's umbrella during a rainstorm at a bus stop; in gratitude, Totoro presents her with a bundle of acorns and later summons the Catbus to help her locate a missing Mei. Totoro also lives alongside two smaller spiritual companions, known as Chuu-Totoro and Chibi-Totoro.

Trivia

The name Totoro originated from director Hayao Miyazaki's young niece mispronouncing Tokorozawa—the real-world location inspiring the film's setting—alongside the word troll. Early concept designs assigned him working names such as Miminzuku. Beyond his central role in Studio Ghibli media, Totoro made a notable crossover cameo as a plush toy among the playthings in Pixar's 3D animated film Toy Story 3.
