Overview

Vasily is a character from Golden Kamuy who serves as a sniper in the Imperial Russian border guard in Sakhalin. A veteran with experience fighting in the Russo-Japanese War, he ambushes suspects near the border, leading to an intense sniper duel with Hyakunosuke Ogata. After surviving their confrontation, he comes into contact with Saichi Sugimoto's party, who affectionately nickname him 'Zukin-chan'.

Appearance

Vasily is a young man with short brown hair, blue eyes, a beard, and prominent sideburns. His outfit includes a coat, long sleeves, gloves, a hat, and a fur hat (ushanka). After surviving a shot to the side of his face by Hyakunosuke Ogata, he bears a facial scar and permanently wears a hood covering his lower face, though the scar briefly shows when he eats.

Personality

As a skilled sniper, Vasily possesses a cold-blooded pragmatic streak and intense caution, willing to use wounded allies as bait without letting hatred cloud his judgment. Despite his cold demeanor in combat, he has a creative side and remarkable artistic talent, using detailed sketches to communicate. He also displays a comedic side when startled by Hyakunosuke Ogata's presence.

Abilities

Vasily utilizes a Russian Mosin-Nagant rifle and boasts marksmanship equal to Hyakunosuke Ogata, possessing the exceptional skill required to hit moving targets even under difficult conditions. In addition to his patience and mental endurance in long sniper duels, he is an extraordinarily gifted artist who uses highly detailed drawings to convey complex information.

Background

Vasily Pavlichenko wished to attend art school in his youth but gave up the idea due to his family's financial situation. While ambushing Kiroranke's party at the Sakhalin border, he engaged in a prolonged engagement with Hyakunosuke Ogata, which ended with him being shot in the face. Surviving the wound but left unable to speak properly, he pursued Ogata for revenge and shot Yoshitake Shiraishi's leg to draw him out. After being apprehended by Saichi Saichi Sugimoto, Vasily used a detailed portrait of Ogata to explain his motive, leading Sergeant Tsukishima to interpret for him as he temporarily aligned with the group.

Relationships

Hyakunosuke Ogata is Vasily's fiercest rival, whom he obsessively pursues for revenge after surviving their deadly duel. He lost his comrade Ilya during that same battle. Saichi Sugimoto initially overpowered him, but spared him upon recognizing his drawing of Ogata. Vasily shot Yoshitake Shiraishi in the leg solely because he remembered him being with Ogata, and relied on Sergeant Tsukishima to translate his intentions using Russian.

Trivia

His character incorporates traits from historical snipers Vasily Zaitsev and Lyudmila Pavlichenko, while his survival after being shot in the face parallels the story of Simo Häyhä. Due to his speech impairment, his vocalizations and even his internal narrative thoughts are rendered as 'Fun fun' (muffled grunts). His weapon of choice, the Mosin-Nagant rifle, was a cutting-edge standard-issue firearm for Russia during that era.
