Overview

Anguirus is a quadrupedal kaiju appearing in the Godzilla franchise across film, television, and animation. First introduced in the 1955 film Godzilla Raids Again as Godzilla's very first rival, Anguirus stands as one of the oldest recurring monsters in Toho cinematic history. Depending on the era and continuity, Anguirus fulfills roles ranging from a fierce opponent to Godzilla's most dependable battle companion, while also being depicted as a prophetic beast in Godzilla Singular Point.

Appearance

A quadrupedal monster mutated from a dinosaur by hydrogen bomb testing. Its back is covered in a heavy carapace studded with numerous sharp spikes, and its head is adorned with horns. Early prototype designs featured a split carapace arranged in two upward-curving rows. In Godzilla Singular Point, its front limbs are plantigrade while its hind limbs are digitigrade, with back armor that splits into a swallowtail shape at the base of the tail. The Godzilla FINAL WARS version incorporates a belly design inspired by Baragon and a small hammer-like structure at the tail tip.

Personality

The original Anguirus lived up to its title of Fierce Dragon, exhibiting an exceptionally violent nature and intense hatred toward all other living beings. Conversely, the second-generation individual introduced later in the Showa series displayed a far milder demeanor, serving as Godzilla's loyal battle partner and trusted companion. Known for charging fearlessly into battle to aid allies despite taking heavy punishment, it earned recognition even among humans as Godzilla's closest monster friend. In Godziban, Anguirus is similarly portrayed as a peace-loving creature that shows great bravery during crises.

Abilities

Nerve clusters dispersed throughout its body function like secondary brains, endowing Anguirus with top-tier agility and reaction speed. Unfitted with energy beam attacks in film portrayals, it relies purely on physical combat such as biting, charging, body pressing with its spiky back, and tail strikes. The first generation's roar produced ultrasonic waves capable of cracking Osaka Castle. In Godzilla FINAL WARS, it executes the Bouryukai Kyuretsudan (Anguirus Ball), rolling into a sphere for high-speed aerial charges. In Godzilla Singular Point, it shifts to a rainbow color under attack, vibrating its back spikes at high speeds to reflect damage while leveraging future-sensing capabilities and high jumping power.

Background

First clashing with Godzilla on Iwato Island in 1955, Anguirus fought a devastating battle in Osaka before being slain. A second-generation individual later emerged as Godzilla's battle ally, joining forces at Mount Fuji against King Ghidorah, near Tokyo against Gigan, and at Gotenba against Fake Godzilla (Mechagodzilla). In Godzilla FINAL WARS, controlled by the Xiliens, it attacked Shanghai before engaging Godzilla in the Aokigahara forest. In Godzilla Singular Point, Anguirus roamed Nigio City seeking Radon carcasses, eventually engaging local hunters and Otaki Factory's Jet Jaguar in battle.

Relationships

While the original Anguirus fought Godzilla as a fierce enemy, subsequent incarnations formed a deep partnership with Godzilla, fighting side by side against invaders such as King Ghidorah, Gigan, and Fake Godzilla. In Godzilla FINAL WARS, it fought alongside Radon and King Caesar under Xilien mind control against Godzilla. In Godzilla Singular Point, Anguirus fought the Otaki Factory robot Jet Jaguar; following its defeat, its broken horn was salvaged and crafted into a spear wielded by Jet Jaguar under Yung's control.

Trivia

The name Anguirus derives from the dinosaur Ankylosaurus. During production of Godzilla Raids Again, Toho held an internal naming contest that produced alternative candidate names such as Gyottos, Zottos, Osoros, Sugon, Zeider, Bigro, Wanibull, and Getemo. Due to the physical challenges of filming quadrupedal suits alongside upright monsters, proposed appearances in various Heisei and Millennium films—including concept variants like Anguirus Hound and Baragirus for Godzilla vs. Destoroyah, or a deceased carcass in Tokyo SOS—were repeatedly scrapped.
