Overview

A major character in Undertale and the very first entity the protagonist encounters upon falling into the Underground. Initially presenting himself as an innocent golden flower who offers a friendly tutorial, he quickly reveals his dark nature as a malicious force driving the rule of the Underground.

Appearance

In his base form, he appears as a golden flower with six yellow petals, a white center, and a light green stem. He can freely distort his face and mimic the expressions and voices of others. Upon absorbing the human souls in the Neutral Route, he turns into a grotesque form known as Photoshop Flowey or Omega Flowey, composed of leafy vines, cacti, pieced-together body organs, metal pipes, and a television monitor displaying video footage.

Personality

He hides his sadism behind a polite, cheerful facade, using warm greetings and calling himself a best friend before dropping the mask. Viewing the world through a ruthless principle of killing or being killed, he displays a twisted sense of humor and extreme cruelty. Despite his arrogance and desire to manipulate others, he becomes deeply cowardly when confronted by unpredictable or overwhelming threats.

Abilities

He attacks by firing bullets termed friendliness pellets and can submerge into the ground to travel and stalk the protagonist. Possessing awareness of saving and loading, he formerly held the power to reset time and can manipulate save data directly. In his giant transformed state, he commands a vast arsenal including darts, vines, cacti, flamethrowers, bombs, and powerful energy beams, alongside temporary control over save points.

Background

He came into being through experiments conducted by the Royal Scientist Alphys, who injected Determination into a golden flower covered in the dust of Asriel Dreemurr. Reborn without a soul, he lost the ability to feel empathy or affection. After gaining the power to save and reload, he exhaustively explored every potential outcome and interaction in the Underground, ultimately falling into deep apathy and cruel detachment.

Relationships

He shares a past familial connection with Asgore Dreemurr and Toriel Dreemurr, while Alphys is responsible for his creation. He manipulated Papyrus, who even started a fan club for him, but remains wary of Sans due to past timeline encounters. His interaction with Frisk and the first fallen human is marked by intense obsession, viewing them as the only entities capable of surprising him.

Trivia

Attempting to name the fallen human Flowey at the start of the game prompts a unique rejection message. His inclusion serves a structural purpose by challenging player expectations regarding non-violent resolutions, ensuring they make conscious choices rather than passively following instructions.
