Overview
Toriel is a prominent character in Undertale and Deltarune. As the former queen of the Underground and the self-appointed caretaker of the Ruins, she serves as the secondary NPC encountered by the protagonist. Possessing a caprine appearance, she assumes a maternal, protective role, offering shelter, guidance, and warmth to human children who drop into the subterranean realm.
Appearance
Toriel is an anthropomorphic Boss Monster covered in white fur, featuring long drooping ears, a pair of short horns, and a protruding snout with visible small fangs. She has long eyelashes and pale red irises, with paws that end in claws. Taller and stockier than most female characters, she dresses in a loose, flowing blue-purple robe decorated with the emblem of the Delta Rune across the chest. She also wears reading glasses when reading.
Personality
Toriel possesses a deeply maternal, gentle, and protective nature, acting with overwhelming affection toward children. This motherly care can manifest as fierce overprotectiveness, leading her to restrict others' freedom to keep them safe. Alongside her earnest interest in education and baking—particularly butterscotch-cinnamon pie—she harbored a playful sense of humor, taking immense joy in simple puns and riddles. Despite her warmth, she can be uncompromisingly firm, showing cold disdain toward those whose actions she strongly rejects.
Abilities
Toriel is a powerful Boss Monster capable of manipulating fire magic, unleashing fireballs from her palms that she uses both in combat and for domestic tasks like cooking. She possesses high offensive and defensive stats among monsters, as well as restorative magic capable of healing injuries. During battle, if her opponent's health falls to a critical level, her fire attacks automatically alter their trajectory to deliberately avoid inflicting a lethal blow.
Background
Toriel once ruled the Underground alongside King Asgore Dreemurr, raising their biological son Asriel and an adopted human child, Chara. After both children died tragically in a single day, Asgore declared war on humanity, vowing to collect seven human souls to shatter the barrier separating monsters from the surface. Rejecting his vengeful policy, Toriel relinquished her royal status and secluded herself in the Ruins. There, she spent long years caring for fallen human children and guarding the gateway until the protagonist's arrival.
Relationships
Toriel holds bitter resentment toward her ex-husband, King Asgore Dreemurr, for his ruthless policy regarding human souls, treating him with open disdain. She cherished her biological son Asriel and her adopted child Chara deeply. Through the sealed Ruins door, she developed a warm friendship with Sans over shared puns, securing a promise from him to protect any humans who passed through. Upon meeting the protagonist, she immediately adopts a deeply protective, maternal role toward them.
Trivia
Attempting to enter "Toriel" as the protagonist's name prompts a unique message rejecting the choice. Her cell phone is notoriously swallowed by the "Annoying Dog" (representing creator Toby Fox) during her absence in the Ruins. In official game promotional material, she was humorously rendered as a crude 3D model destroying obstacles. Official fifth-anniversary commentary later revealed that she turns surprisingly rowdy and unruly when consuming alcoholic beverages.
