Overview
A prominent video game character appearing in Capcom's Final Fight and Street Fighter franchises. Serving as the 39th grandmaster of Bushinryu Ninjutsu, he is a disciplined ninja who travels the world to suppress rising evil and preserve justice.
Appearance
He wears a bright red ninja garment paired with athletic sneakers intended to maximize his running speed. During training, he foregoes his usual attire for a traditional loincloth (fundoshi) and straw sandals (zori). His overall look was originally inspired by a real-world musician known for wearing orange shirts and sneakers.
Personality
Possessing an unyielding sense of honor and justice, he leads a highly disciplined lifestyle. He maintains an archaic and serious tone of voice, struggling visibly with modern foreign loanwords and mispronouncing them. Despite his traditional background, he shows surprising competence with personal computers and electronic technology. He enjoys traditional Japanese meals, roasted sweet potatoes, bonsai cultivation, and sneaker collecting.
Abilities
His combat capability centers around high-speed movement and minimal recovery time on strikes, derived from Bushinryu Ninjutsu. Key techniques include wall-scaling triangle jumps, rapid dashing maneuvers, the multi-hit Bushin Gokusa Ken, and throwing shuriken in select titles. He is also adept at swift escape methods, including using distractors like sweets to slip away from confrontation.
Background
Originally a troubled youth, his natural fighting talent was discovered by the master Zeku, who trained him to become the 39th master of Bushinryu. While traveling in the United States for self-improvement, he learned that his friend Cody Travers's girlfriend had been kidnapped, prompting him to help destroy the Mad Gear syndicate out of pure chivalry. He continues his journey across the globe to combat evil forces like Shadaloo.
Relationships
He shares a strong bond of friendship with Cody Travers and Mike Haggar from their joint campaign against Mad Gear. He was taught by the 38th grandmaster Zeku and is engaged to Rena Genryusai. Rena's younger sister, Maki Genryusai, views him as an uninvited rival. Additionally, he acts as a mentor to his student Kimberly Jackson and maintains a close friendship with Rose.
Trivia
His character concept was modeled after Guy Picciotto, the lead singer of the late 1980s punk rock band Fugazi who frequently wore orange shirts and sneakers. In the Street Fighter Alpha series, he makes a signature stage entrance by breaking open a drum barrel. He also possesses an unusually specialized talent for roasting sweet potatoes.
