Overview
Hanagaki Takemichi is the main protagonist of Tokyo Revengers. Initially a 26-year-old unmotivated freeter living a dreary existence, he gains the ability to leap exactly 12 years into the past after an incident on a train platform. To prevent the tragic death of his middle-school girlfriend, Tachibana Hinata, and to alter the cruel destiny awaiting his comrades, he plunges into the conflict-ridden world of the Tokyo Manji Gang.
Appearance
Takemichi is defined visually by his blue eyes. He has short hair that appears in black or styled blonde variations, which frequently becomes disheveled alongside a bruised and swollen face following intense physical altercations. His wardrobe includes casual wear such as white shirts, long-sleeved clothing, and jackets, as well as the dark tokkofuku uniform of the Tokyo Manji Gang. For transportation, he rides a bicycle named Shippugo and a CB250T motorcycle.
Personality
Takemichi begins as a timid and irresponsible individual who habitually apologizes and flees from hardship. He shows a comical vulnerability to attractive women, such as Sano Emma, which often leads to swift punishment from Tachibana Hinata. However, once he resolves to stand his ground, he exhibits unbelievable mental fortitude and courage. No matter how many times he is beaten down, he refuses to give up, earning the deep admiration and respect of powerful delinquents.
Abilities
Takemichi possesses the time-leaping ability triggered by shaking hands with specific individuals like Tachibana Naoto, allowing him to travel back exactly 12 years to the same calendar day. While leaping, his present body remains in a comatose state. In physical combat, his martial skills are remarkably low, often leaving him heavily beaten; however, his physical resilience and endurance are among the highest in the series. When driven by sheer willpower, he can land blows powerful enough to drop Shiba Taiju and fight evenly against Kakucho.
Background
During middle school, Takemichi and his friends in the Mizochu group were forced into servitude by the Tokyo Manji Gang, prompting him to flee after graduation. Years later, while working at a video rental store at age 26, a fall onto subway tracks triggers his time-travel powers. Learning of Tachibana Hinata's death, he collaborates with her brother Tachibana Naoto to rewrite history. Ascending within the gang from 1st Division Captain to leader of the second-generation Tokyo Manji Gang, he repeatedly fights to alter the future.
Relationships
Tachibana Hinata is his girlfriend and primary motivation, while her brother Tachibana Naoto serves as his crucial partner and trigger for time travel. Sano Manjirou, leader of the Tokyo Manji Gang, affectionately nicknames him Takemitchy and places immense trust in him. He forms a strong bond with vice-leader Ryuguji Ken and shares an unbreakable brotherhood with Matsuno Chifuyu, who acts as his loyal right-hand man in past timelines.
Trivia
His given name Takemichi is derived directly from the Japanese word for martial arts. In a collaboration event with the mobile game Monster Strike, his lack of raw combat prowess in the original story resulted in him being released as a free log-in reward character rather than a gacha item.
