Overview
Jibanyan is a Charming-tribe cat Yo-kai and the iconic mascot character of LEVEL-5's Yo-kai Watch franchise. Originally a domestic cat who transformed into an earthbound spirit after a fatal traffic collision, he spent his days haunting a city intersection to challenge oncoming trucks. After meeting the main protagonist, Keita Amano, he becomes Keita's close companion and battle partner, taking up residence inside his bedroom closet while frequently assisting him in resolving various supernatural incidents throughout the series.
Appearance
Standing approximately 70 cm tall, Jibanyan is a red cat Yo-kai with a large head, big eyes, and white paw tips. On his forehead is an inverted ghost-like white pattern, and his left ear has a distinct notch from his fatal car accident. He possesses two tails with burning blue-green flames at their tips. Around his neck, he wears an aqua collar featuring a yellow bell, and a yellowish-brown haramaki (belly band) is wrapped around his waist.
Personality
Jibanyan is exceptionally lazy, easygoing, and often complains about tasks being tedious. He uses the self-referential pronoun "Orecchi" and regularly ends his sentences with the phrase "...nyan." A passionate enthusiast of the idol group NyaaKB48—with Fusasa as his favorite member—he holds fan membership #7 and religiously kisses posters before bed. He is obsessed with eating Chocoboo snacks and lives in Keita Amano's closet, constantly bickering with Whisper. Despite his lazy demeanor, he takes pride in his identity as a cat earthbound spirit and dislikes water.
Abilities
His signature Soultimate move is "Hyakuretsu Nikukyu" (Paws of Fury), a rapid barrage of punches honed through fighting oncoming vehicles. In battle, he attacks using sharp claws and the fire-element technique "Hibana no Jutsu." He can attach a numbing talisman ("Shibireru Ofuda") to slow or immobilize opponents, and benefits from the "Maenomeri" skill, which increases his offensive power upon defeating foes. His possession causes humans to halt abruptly in traffic, causing cars to slam on their brakes. Additionally, he can undergo fusion with other Yo-kai, such as combining with Whisper to form Buchinyan.
Background
Before becoming a Yo-kai, Jibanyan was a normal house cat named Akamaru who lived happily with his owner, Emi-chan. He lost his life when he jumped in front of a truck to save her from an oncoming collision. Overhearing her tearfully mutter "how lame" right after the crash, he misconstrued her grief as disappointment. Determined to train until he could defeat a truck and regain her admiration, he remained at the intersection as an earthbound spirit. After eventually losing his haunting spot to rival spirits, he befriended Keita Amano and moved into his bedroom closet.
Relationships
He shares a close bond with Keita Amano, living in his bedroom and serving as his primary Yo-kai partner in combat. He maintains a comical, bickering relationship with Whisper, with whom he can also temporarily fuse into Buchinyan. He holds deep affection for his former owner, Emi-chan, keeping a photo of her close to his heart. Among humans, he addresses girls like Fumika Kodama with friendly endearments. Additionally, he is a dedicated admirer of the idol group NyaaKB48, harboring particular devotion toward the member Fusasa.
Trivia
Jibanyan's name is a blend of jibakurei (earthbound spirit) and nyan (the Japanese sound for a cat's meow). His signature haramaki belly band typically holds up to 15 Chocoboo chocolate bars, though it can store up to 101 when at maximum capacity. In the original video game, his favorite food was seafood, but this was updated to Chocoboo starting in Yo-kai Watch 2 to align with the anime adaptation. Demonstrating his real-world popularity, he was once officially appointed as a tourism children's ambassador for Hawaii.
