Overview
Romuska Palo Ul Laputa, commonly known as Colonel Muska, is the primary antagonist of the animated film Castle in the Sky. Serving as a twenty-eight-year-old colonel in a government special intelligence agency, he collaborates with the military to locate the floating city of Laputa and its powerful Levitation Stone. Beneath his refined demeanor lies a secret royal lineage and a cold-blooded ambition to weaponize Laputa's ancient technology to rule the world.
Appearance
Muska is consistently depicted wearing tinted glasses or sunglasses that conceal light brown or golden eyes. Strong winds blowing his bangs upward reveal a slightly receding hairline. He dresses in formal suits and military-style attire. When he briefly removes his eyewear, he shows remarkably handsome facial features.
Personality
On the surface, Muska maintains a polite and gentlemanly demeanor, preferring to avoid unnecessary violence. Beneath this refined facade lies a cold-blooded megalomaniac who willingly betrays allies and sacrifices subordinates to achieve his goals. Highly educated and confident in his intellect, he exhibits a sadistic streak when holding the upper hand, delighting in destruction and chaos. However, his overwhelming arrogance occasionally causes him to drop his guard at critical moments.
Abilities
Muska possesses extraordinary intellect and analytical skills, capable of deciphering ancient scripts, complex ciphers, and historical texts referencing religious scriptures. His intelligence-gathering network allows him to uncover deeply hidden secrets. He is a master marksman, capable of shooting precise targets even in low-light conditions. He operates an Enfield No.2 Mk.I break-action six-shot revolver with high expertise, demonstrating the ability to execute a complete reload in just a few seconds.
Background
Muska is a descendant of the Palo line, a branch of the ancient Laputian royal family. After the royals descended to Earth, the Palo line split from the main agricultural branch during the Industrial Revolution to pursue the dream of returning to Laputa. Armed with translated ancient documents detailing Laputian secrets, Muska became a government colonel and tracked down Sheeta. Upon arriving at Laputa, he betrayed the military forces and seized control of the citadel's superweapons. However, his victory was ruined when Sheeta and Pazu invoked the destruction spell, blinding him with intense light and sending him falling into the ocean alongside the collapsing city.
Relationships
Muska targets Lucyita Toel Ul Laputa because she belongs to the main royal lineage, seeking her Levitation Stone and secrets before attempting to coerce her into helping him rebuild the Laputian empire. He dismisses Pazu as a minor nuisance, arrogantly giving him a brief three-minute reprieve during their confrontation. General Mouro detests Muska as an upstart officer, a feeling mutual to Muska, who ultimately disposes of the general and his soldiers once he secures control of Laputa's core mechanisms.
Trivia
Muska's name originates from the Latin word musca, meaning housefly, aligned with pre-production notes describing his dislike of small insects. Conceptually, he was developed with ties to the character Lepka from Future Boy Conan, with early designs portraying him as a direct visual predecessor. His theatrical lines and dramatic demise made him an enduring pop-culture figure, inspiring countless internet memes and video remixes.
