Overview
Sheeta is the heroine and co-protagonist of the animated film Castle in the Sky. Raised as an orphan in the secluded Valley of Gondoa, she is secretly the rightful heir to the royal family of the ancient floating kingdom of Laputa. Her possession of a glowing blue Levitation Stone, a sacred royal heirloom, draws the attention of both military secret agents and sky pirates, entangling her in an extraordinary voyage to uncover the truth of her ancestry.
Appearance
Sheeta is a young girl around twelve to thirteen years old with brown hair and brown eyes. Initially, she wears her long hair in twin braids held by a hairband, though her hair is later shot short during a confrontation. Around her neck, she carries a glowing blue Levitation Stone pendant. Her attire transitions throughout her journey from a simple blue dress to borrowed male clothes, a plain white nightgown during her captivity, and finally a oversized yellow blouse paired with red bloomers extended to her ankles.
Personality
Sheeta possesses a gentle, refined demeanor and a deeply compassionate nature that shuns violence and flashy aesthetics. Though appearing demure, she is exceptionally resilient and proactive, demonstrating remarkable courage and quick thinking when facing danger. She adapts swiftly to unfamiliar circumstances, earning the respect of the sky pirate leader Dola, who recognizes a shared strength of spirit and compares the young girl to her own youth.
Abilities
Raised in the mountains, Sheeta possesses keen eyesight and sharp cognitive skills. She can accurately determine and memorize cardinal directions using the position of the sunrise, season, and surrounding landscape. She demonstrates remarkable practical skills, capable of quickly organizing a chaotic ship galley and cooking stew. Additionally, she holds ancestral knowledge of secret incantations passed down through the Laputan royal family.
Background
Sheeta lived a quiet life alone in the Valley of Gondoa, tending fields and livestock after her family passed away. Her peace was shattered when secret agent Muska captured her for the Levitation Stone she inherited. Escaping during a raid by the Dola gang, she fell from an airship, saved only by the stone's mysterious power. Rescued by Pazu, a young apprentice mechanic, she gradually embraced her true lineage as Lusheeta Toel Ul Laputa. Together with Pazu and the sky pirates, she journeyed toward the legendary floating castle to keep its power out of dangerous hands.
Relationships
Sheeta shares an unshakeable bond of mutual trust with Pazu, who rescues her at the start of her journey and supports her throughout her ordeal. In contrast, she firmly opposes Romushka Palo Ul Laputa (Muska), a fellow descendant of the royal bloodline who seeks to reactivate Laputa's terrifying weapons for domination. Though initially pursued by Dola and her pirate crew, Sheeta develops a warm friendship with them, and Dola comes to view her with affectionate, maternal care.
Trivia
The name Sheeta was originally conceived by director Hayao Miyazaki during his student years for a puppet show, derived from the Greek letter Theta (θ). The character also draws inspiration from Sita, the heroine of the ancient Indian epic Ramayana. In the fictional language of Laputa, the titles embedded in her ceremonial name hold specific meanings: 'Ul' translates to 'king,' while 'Toel' signifies 'true.'
