Overview

Kaonashi, also known as No Face, is a mysterious spirit featured in Studio Ghibli's animated film Spirited Away. Depicted as a dark, shadowy entity wearing a white mask, he initially appears as a quiet, unobtrusive figure hovering outside the bathhouse Aburaya. After encountering the protagonist Ogino Chihiro, he develops a strong interest in her, becoming a pivotal character whose actions significantly impact the events within the bathhouse and beyond.

Appearance

Kaonashi possesses a black, semi-transparent shadowy body topped with a white mask featuring purple facial markings. While his mask is generally featureless, subtle emotional shifts can occasionally be detected on it. His body conceals a large hidden mouth used for eating. After swallowing Aogaeru, his limbs temporarily take on frog-like characteristics, and excessive consumption causes his torso to swell into an immense, bloated form.

Personality

Kaonashi is inherently quiet, solitary, and lacking a strong sense of self. Having experienced extreme isolation, he forms a deep fixated devotion to Ogino Chihiro after she shows him simple kindness, constantly offering her items to gain her approval. However, he is highly susceptible to his environment; influenced by the greed of Aburaya, he becomes arrogant and destructive. Once restored to his natural state, he resumes a gentle and submissive demeanor.

Abilities

Kaonashi can conjure gold out of soil, though these creations eventually revert to mud. He exhibits telekinesis, such as levitating bath tokens, and can render his body invisible to erase his presence. By swallowing other creatures, he gains the ability to speak using their voices and absorb their physical traits. Additionally, he possesses refined manual dexterity, demonstrating skill in spinning thread and knitting.

Background

After noticing Ogino Chihiro on the bridge to the bathhouse, Kaonashi began watching her. Chihiro allowed him inside Aburaya to shelter from rain, prompting him to assist her by securing bath tokens. Influenced by the bathhouse workers' greed, he swallowed Aogaeru and other staff, using temporary gold to demand endless food until he grew into a rampaging monster. When Chihiro rejected his gold and fed him a bitter dumpling from the River Spirit, he regurgitated everyone he had consumed and shrank back to his original form. He then traveled with Chihiro to the home of Zeniba at Swamp Bottom, where Zeniba offered him a permanent home as her crafting assistant.

Relationships

He develops an intense fixation on Ogino Chihiro due to her initial kindness, though this eventually settles into a tranquil bond. Zeniba, Yubaba's twin sister, recognizes his crafting talent and offers him a peaceful refuge as her assistant. Yubaba, the proprietor of Aburaya, finds herself unable to control his destructive rampage within her establishment. Aogaeru, a bathhouse employee, is the first individual swallowed by Kaonashi to acquire speech.

Trivia

Director Hayao Miyazaki stated that Kaonashi represents the unstable emotions and desires present within everyone. Originally, he was designed merely as a minor background figure standing on the bridge, but his role was expanded into a central plot figure during production. In international localizations of the film, while most character names remained untranslated, Kaonashi's name was directly translated into regional languages such as No Face.
