Overview

A character from the anime film Cho Kaguya-Hime!. She serves as both the administrator and the premier top streamer of "Tsukuyomi," a vast virtual reality space. Ostensibly portrayed as a mysterious 8,000-year-old AI who can sing, dance, and create clones of herself, she deeply cherishes Tsukuyomi as a sanctuary where everyone can freely engage in creative endeavors, constantly watching over its users with care.

Appearance

A girl of mysterious air characterized by her twintail hairstyle. Attached to her chest is a flapjack octopus-shaped plush mascot whose facial expressions synchronize with her own emotions. In the competitive game KASSEN, she changes into battle attire consisting of a sleeveless top that exposes her midriff and a pair of mobility-focused short pants.

Personality

While initially projecting an enigmatic aura, she possesses a high-energy personality that frequently employs self-made slang and unique internet speech patterns. Approachable and friendly, she maintains close interactions with regular virtual users. Beneath her playful demeanor lies profound inner sorrow; having witnessed countless human lives and deaths over millennia, she conceals her emotional turmoil behind a constant, practiced smile.

Abilities

Beyond her singing and dancing skills, she possesses the ability to create duplicate clones of herself. As administrator, she assists users with avatar configuration and manages game balance. In KASSEN combat, she wields a jellyfish-themed Japanese umbrella created by holding a marble in her mouth and blowing into the frame like glassblowing. The umbrella spins rapidly like a circular saw to slash enemies, doubles as a shield, and can be thrown for ranged attacks. Its handle functions as a blowpipe for generating bombs, and she uses a folding fan to parry sniper fire without looking. For mounted transport, she rides a palanquin pulled by Sacabambaspis.

Background

Runami Yachiyo's true identity is Kaguya herself. After returning to the moon, Kaguya decided to return to Earth upon hearing Iroha Sakayori's song. However, a spacecraft malfunction caused by a meteor impact stranded her on Earth roughly 8,000 years in the past. Spending millennia enduring loneliness alongside human lives and deaths, she established the virtual world Tsukuyomi as a peaceful space for expression without conflict, eventually embracing her destiny to become Yachiyo.

Relationships

Iroha Sakayori is the most vital person to Yachiyo, who shows clear affection and favoritism toward her within Tsukuyomi and during competitive events. Yachiyo is saved from her long isolation when Iroha accepts her full 8,000-year history. Additionally, she is accompanied by FUSHI, a sea slug creature materialized from her companion Doge using her remaining energy to serve as her link to the outside world.

Trivia

Her name "Yachiyo" originates from the Japanese term yachiyo, meaning eight thousand years or an endless era. Her character design and thematic elements pay homage to Hatsune Miku, sharing stylistic poses and song covers. Initial concept art featured a lavish oiran-inspired outfit with a collarbone piercing, and early story drafts considered a bitter ending where Iroha never discovers her true identity. In international localizations, her unique signature greeting speech pattern is simplified into standard greetings.
