Overview
Fujimoto is a major supporting character in Studio Ghibli's animated feature film Ponyo. Once a human, he abandoned life on land to become a sea wizard and ocean researcher. He is the overprotective father of Ponyo and her countless younger sisters, as well as the husband of the oceanic deity Gran Mamare.
Appearance
Fujimoto is a tall, gaunt man with pale skin, heavy dark circles under his eyes, and long, unruly red hair. He wears earrings and dresses in a colorful ensemble composed of a blue-and-white pinstriped jacket, a red cravat, and blue trousers. While visiting dry land, he frequently uses a golden pump spray filled with deep seawater to keep his skin from drying out.
Personality
Deeply disgusted by human pollution and environmental destruction, Fujimoto harbors a strong misanthropy toward mankind. As a parent, he is intensely anxious and overprotective, often flying into comical panics whenever his plans are disrupted. Beneath his stern and theatrical demeanor, he is a deeply caring father who prioritizes the safety of his family and the delicate harmony of nature.
Abilities
Fujimoto commands potent marine sorcery alongside deep scientific knowledge of oceanography. He formulates magical golden elixirs and stores potent seawater within underwater wells to manipulate aquatic forces and maintain ecological equilibrium. For transportation throughout the ocean depths, he navigates a specialized submarine fashioned after a basking shark.
Background
Fujimoto was originally a human who renounced terrestrial life out of resentment toward humanity's destruction of nature. Taking refuge in the ocean, he fell in love with Gran Mamare, the ocean goddess, and together they had Ponyo and her countless sisters. He spent years raising his family and harvesting magic underwater. However, when his eldest daughter Ponyo escapes to the surface and begins transforming into a human, Fujimoto scrambles frantically to retrieve her before the physical balance of the planet collapses.
Relationships
Fujimoto holds intense devotion toward his majestic wife, Gran Mamare, yielding completely to her wisdom. He is deeply protective of his eldest daughter, Ponyo, whose rebellious nature frequently exasperates him, while also cherishing her numerous tiny sisters. Although initially harboring deep resentment toward the young human boy Sosuke, Fujimoto ultimately recognizes Sosuke's sincere love for Ponyo and accepts their relationship.
Trivia
Despite his ambitions as a grand ocean wizard, Fujimoto often acts as a comic character driven to desperate panics by his daughter's antics and mistaken for a suspicious figure on land. His decision to bestow the Scandinavian mythic name Brunhilde upon Ponyo reflects his high-flown aesthetic sensibilities.
