Overview

Granmamare is a major character from Studio Ghibli's animated feature film Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea. Revering her as the "Mother of the Sea," the story presents her as a divine oceanic entity who is the mother of Ponyo and her countless younger sisters, as well as the wife of the sorcerer Fujimoto.

Appearance

Granmamare presents an ageless and radiant female form. Her defining physical traits include extraordinarily long red hair that drifts gently in the ocean, bright blue eyes, pronounced eyelashes, vibrant red lips, and visible collarbones.

Personality

Granmamare possesses a free-spirited and unconstrained temperament. Loving her freedom, she wanders the expansive oceans while maintaining a calm, commanding, and infinitely gentle presence over her husband and children.

Abilities

As a divine sea entity, Granmamare exhibits eternal youth and can fluidly scale her physical body from human size to a magnitude exceeding large sea vessels. She possesses bioluminescent traits, with her human-shaped upper body functioning like the luminous lure of an anglerfish.

Background

In her past, Granmamare was wed to Fujimoto after he fell in love with her at first sight while serving aboard the submarine Nautilus. Rather than residing permanently in his underwater home, she assigned the upbringing of their daughters to him while continuing her unfettered journeys across the sea. Lore suggests she also has multiple other spouses.

Relationships

She is married to Fujimoto, who holds her in deep reverence and defers entirely to her authority. Granmamare is also the loving mother of Ponyo and her innumerable younger sisters.

Trivia

Her visual appearance draws inspiration from Ophelia in William Shakespeare's Hamlet, specifically referencing the well-known painting by John Everett Millais. Although depicted as a divine ocean goddess, official setting materials note her underlying concept as an anglerfish mermaid.
