Overview

Ponyo is the main protagonist of Studio Ghibli's animated feature film Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea. Born to the sea goddess Gran Mamare and the ocean sorcerer Fujimoto, she is a magical demigod and the eldest among her sisters. Originally an aquatic creature living in the deep sea, her unexpected meeting with a human boy named Sosuke inspires her to abandon her ocean life to become a human girl.

Appearance

Ponyo initially appears as a small aquatic creature with a human-like face. Upon transforming into a human girl, she exhibits short red hair. Her attire consists of a simple bright red dress worn with white bloomers, and she routinely goes barefoot.

Personality

Ponyo is exceptionally energetic, bright, and innocent, driven by intense curiosity about the human realm. She expresses her feelings openly and spontaneously, showing absolute affection for Sosuke. Her strong-willed temperament leads her to defy her father's strict instructions so she can stay by Sosuke's side. She also displays a fond appetite for human food, particularly cooked ham.

Abilities

By licking blood from Sosuke's wound, Ponyo acquires the ability to shift into a half-fish form. Bathing in the Water of Life from the deep well inside the Coral Tower enables her to fully transform into a human. Additionally, she uses magic to greatly enlarge a small toy boat and possesses enough ocean power to run across giant fish-shaped waves.

Background

Living in the ocean with her father Fujimoto and many younger sisters, Ponyo was originally named Brunhilde. Curiosity led her to slip away from home, but she became stuck in a glass jar and floated ashore. Five-year-old Sosuke rescued her and named her Ponyo, a title she gladly adopted. After tasting Sosuke's blood, her latent magic awakened. Although her father retrieved her to the underwater depths, her fierce desire to reunite with Sosuke caused her to unleash the Water of Life, creating a massive storm as she returned to the human world.

Relationships

Sosuke: A five-year-old boy who saves Ponyo from a glass jar and promises to protect her. He is the person Ponyo adores most. Fujimoto: Her protective father, an ocean sorcerer who tries to keep Ponyo away from humans and force her back into the ocean. Gran Mamare: Her mother, the benevolent sea goddess, who understands Ponyo's feelings and gracefully supports her choice to become human. Ponyo's Sisters: Her numerous smaller aquatic sisters who look up to her and help her escape. Lisa: Sosuke's energetic mother, who warmly welcomes Ponyo into their home.

Trivia

Her father initially gave her the name Brunhilde after the legendary Valkyrie of Germanic mythology. However, she much preferred the name Ponyo, which Sosuke picked based on her squishy physical texture.
