Overview
Aza Choubei is a character from the manga and anime series Hell's Paradise: Jigokuraku. Known by the title Bandit King, he formerly led a powerful group of bandits hidden deep in the mountains of Iyo Province. After being captured by the shogunate and sentenced to death, he is selected as one of the condemned criminals dispatched to the mysterious island of Shinsenkyo to search for the Elixir of Life in exchange for a full pardon.
Appearance
Choubei is characterized by his spiked yellow hair with a single braid hanging down the right side of his face, alongside a distinct facial scar. He possesses sharp teeth and wears accessories including earrings, rings, and a cross necklace, dressed in a tank top beneath a black jacket paired with dark pants. When undergoing flowerification, his physical form transforms, sprouting multiple plant tentacles directly from his back.
Personality
Despite his fierce and violent behavior, Choubei possesses sharp analytical skills and a pragmatic mind. He refuses to submit to outside authorities, holding an unyielding sense of self-reliance. He is willing to swallow his pride and adapt to extreme conditions whenever necessary to stay alive. Beneath his ruthless disposition lies a profound devotion to his younger brother, making their mutual survival his ultimate and unwavering motivation.
Abilities
Possessing formidable physical strength, Choubei can overpower opponents even while bound and wield massive axes with ease. He excels at psychological manipulation and tactical adaptability. Upon awakening to Tao on the island, he manifests the Metal attribute. His subsequent flowerification grants him superhuman regenerative powers similar to the Tensen, along with powerful tentacle attacks from his back, though overusing this power risks losing his sanity or draining his life force entirely.
Background
Originally born into a samurai family, Choubei lost his status when his father was executed due to a lord's crime. Left with nothing, he and his younger brother Touma endured extreme poverty. Through sheer force of will and adaptability, Choubei fought his way up to become the formidable leader of a major bandit gang in Iyo. After his arrest by the shogunate, he was sent to Shinsenkyo, monitored by Touma, who had secretly infiltrated the Yamada Asaemon clan to assist him.
Relationships
Choubei shares an unbreakable bond with his younger brother, Yamada Asaemon Touma, whom he protects above all else. During his time on Shinsenkyo, he comes into conflict with Rien, the leader of the immortal Tensen, who subjects Choubei to brutal experiments and torture, though Choubei uses the capture to infiltrate the enemy's headquarters.
Trivia
In the official mobile game adaptation, a gender-swapped female version of Choubei was released as a playable character for an April Fools' event. Additionally, an alternate-universe story featured him as a Caribbean pirate, which changed his innate Tao attribute from Metal to Water.
