Overview
Yamada Asaemon Eizen is a supporting character in Hell's Paradise: Jigokuraku. As a prominent executioner of the Yamada clan, he holds the top rank of 1st Position in the Shinwa Ittou-ryu style. Serving as a key pillar under the clan master, he commands immense trust from his fellow disciples and is considered the primary candidate to become the next head of the family. During the expedition to the mysterious island of Kotaku to retrieve the Elixir of Life, he volunteers to monitor Rokurota, the most dangerous death row criminal in the group.
Appearance
Eizen is a tall man with long red hair and yellow eyes. Having lost vision in his left eye due to an illness in infancy, he constantly wears an eyepatch over it. He wears traditional Japanese clothing featuring a haori and hakama over white and black kimono. In flashbacks to his youth, his hair is depicted as shorter with a gentler facial expression, whereas later in the narrative he also appears in a skeletal spirit form.
Personality
Calm and highly nurturing, Eizen routinely offers guidance to fellow clan members who look up to him as a dependable leader. While maintaining a solemn commitment to the rules and duties of an executioner, he displays an old-fashioned charm, finding leisure in early morning walks and visiting shrines and temples. He demonstrates deep compassion toward younger disciples, having gently supported Yamada Asaemon Shugen during a traumatic period in his childhood to help him open his heart.
Abilities
Eizen holds the 1st Rank in the Shinwa Ittou-ryu style, placing him at the apex of the Yamada clan hierarchy. Although not necessarily the most lethal warrior in direct combat, his precision as an executioner is unmatched. He strives for an ideal technique modeled after his master—a clean strike completely free of pain and hatred. He is skilled in non-lethal sword techniques such as back-of-the-blade strikes to neutralize attackers, and possesses exemplary leadership and instructional talents suited for governing the clan.
Background
Eizen trained at the Yamada clan dojo longer than any other active ranked executioner, learning directly under Master Yoshitsugu. He actively contributed to guiding younger members, showing a young Yamada Asaemon Sagiri her father at work and taking the traumatized Yamada Asaemon Shugen under his wing as a direct disciple. When dispatched on the Shogunate's expedition to locate the Elixir of Life, he volunteered to supervise Rokurota due to the giant criminal's extreme danger. Shortly after arriving on Kotaku, however, he was caught off guard by the hungry Rokurota and killed instantly when his upper torso was crushed. His martial legacy was later invoked by Shugen, who recreated Eizen's execution technique in the final battle to help protect Edo.
Relationships
To his direct disciple Yamada Asaemon Shugen, Eizen was a cherished mentor and father figure who rescued him from emotional isolation. He shared a quiet, respectful friendship with his contemporary Yamada Asaemon Shion, enjoying peaceful moments together. He also acted as an encouraging senior executioner to Yamada Asaemon Sagiri from her childhood. His connection to his assigned criminal, Rokurota, ended in tragedy when the brute ambushed and killed him upon landing on the island.
Trivia
According to the author, Eizen's immediate death early in the story was planned from the outset to subvert reader expectations. Despite being the highest-ranked executioner in the Yamada clan and the most qualified successor to become clan head, he was the very first Asaemon to die during the island expedition.
