Overview
Gabimaru is the main protagonist of Hell's Paradise: Jigokuraku. Formerly feared as the strongest shinobi of Iwagakure under the alias "Gabimaru the Hollow," he was betrayed by his comrades during a mission and sentenced to death. However, his superhuman durability allows him to survive every execution attempt. Offered an official pardon so he can reunite with his beloved wife, Yui, he embarks on a dangerous expedition to a mysterious island in search of the Elixir of Life, accompanied by his executioner-monitor Yamada Asaemon Sagiri.
Appearance
Gabimaru is a 16-year-old youth with a short stature standing at 150 cm. He has short white hair with bangs covering one eye, and maintains a somewhat lethargic facial expression. He wears traditional Japanese clothing, including a kimono. He possesses an exceptionally dense physical structure, with skin and bones strong enough to snap an executioner's blade upon impact.
Personality
Reflecting his infamous nickname, Gabimaru initially believed himself to be a hollow, cold-blooded killer lacking emotion. In reality, he disproves of unnecessary slaughter and possesses a deeply human capacity for empathy and cooperation. He is immensely devoted to his wife, Yui, and flies into a rage whenever anyone speaks ill of her. Beneath his stoic demeanor, he exhibits relatable flaws, such as holding grudges, muttering complaints when displeased, and showing genuine sensitivity toward those he cares about.
Abilities
As Iwagakure's top shinobi, Gabimaru is a master of martial arts and ninjutsu, capable of lethal combat even while bound. His inner energy, known as Tao, is aligned with the Fire attribute. His signature technique, Hiboushi, elevates his body temperature to ignite his skin oil. He commands numerous fire-based arts, including breathing flames with Hi no Hashi, throwing explosive fireballs via Onibotaru, raining sparks with Bakusui, and executing his ultimate technique Tentei-oroshi, where he slams his ignited arms down to split foes. His arsenal also features projectile attacks such as kicking debris with Ikari-tsubute, throwing boulders with Oo-tsubute, flicking stones like bullets using Hanabari, whipping his steel-hard belt in Shinariba, and unleashing a lethal roundhouse kick called Kibisu-tsume. By mastering Tao, he enhances his physical attributes and inflicts vital damage on the Tensen.
Background
Orphaned at a young age after the chief of Iwagakure murdered his parents, Gabimaru was subjected to relentless and severe shinobi training. He later married the chief's daughter, Yui, whose warmth inspired him to seek a peaceful existence away from bloodshed. Attempting to leave the village by taking on a final mission, he was betrayed by his comrades and arrested by the authorities. Sentenced to death, his uncanny resilience prevented every execution attempt until executioner Yamada Asaemon Sagiri recognized his subconscious desire to live for his wife. Accepting her offer of a full pardon in exchange for retrieving the Elixir of Life, Gabimaru ventures to the perilous island of Shinsenkyo as a condemned convict.
Relationships
Gabimaru's primary motivation is his absolute love for his wife, Yui, whose companionship he strives to regain. His executioner and assigned monitor, Yamada Asaemon Sagiri, initially shared a cautious relationship with him, but their mutual experiences transformed their bond into deep trust, allowing them to balance each other's Tao during critical moments. Within Iwagakure, he is regarded with awe and near-religious reverence by fellow shinobi, even as assassins from his former village are dispatched to eliminate him.
Trivia
The alias "Gabimaru the Hollow" is not a personal name, but a title handed down to the leading shinobi of Iwagakure. Succeeding the title requires defeating the previous holder, creating a legendary reputation that serves as a deterrent and symbol of power for the village. According to official material, his thematic character color is violet.
