Overview
Haiba Lev is a supporting character in Haruichi Furudate's manga series Haikyu!!. He is a first-year middle blocker for the Nekoma High School volleyball team. Being of mixed Japanese and Russian heritage, he possesses a towering physique standing well over 190 centimeters alongside natural physical talents. Self-confident and ambitious, he boldly declares himself to be Nekoma's true ace. Throughout his high school career, he develops a spirited rivalry with Karasuno High School's Shoyo Hinata. Following graduation, he pursues a career as a professional fashion model.
Appearance
Haiba Lev is distinguished by his center-parted silver hair and striking emerald green eyes. Of mixed Japanese and Russian descent, he features an exceptionally tall and lanky frame, measuring 194.3 centimeters in height (later reaching 196 centimeters) with a weight of 79.7 kilograms. His visual design includes long, flexible limbs that reflect his athletic potential. Throughout the series, he is depicted wearing Nekoma High School's volleyball uniform and athletic sportswear, as well as standard school attire consisting of a collared shirt, necktie, and jacket.
Personality
Haiba Lev has an upbeat, straightforward, and intensely confident personality. He is honest to a fault, frequently blurting out whatever comes to his mind without malice. This lack of tact often leads him to touch upon sensitive subjects—such as casually remarking on Morisuke Yaku's height—which results in immediate physical retaliation from his senior. Boldly declaring himself as Nekoma's rightful ace, he harbors a strong competitive spirit and a desire to prove himself. However, he also possesses a playful side, frequently attempting to shirk grueling basic reception drills or complaining about repetitive training.
Abilities
As a middle blocker, Haiba Lev relies on his impressive stature and maximum reach of 345 centimeters to deliver high-point spikes and formidable blocks. Despite his natural athleticism, speed, and stamina, his technical proficiency was virtually non-existent upon joining the team, earning him low ratings for basic skills like receiving and serving. Initially, his lack of timing disrupted setter Kozume Kenma's plays, earning him the nickname blood clot. Through dedicated practice under Kuroo Tetsuro and Yaku Morisuke, he refines his defensive coordination, while also learning the jump float serve from Karasuno's Yamaguchi Tadashi.
Background
Although born to Russian and Japanese parents, Haiba Lev was raised entirely in Japan and cannot speak Russian. He joined the Nekoma High School volleyball club as a freshman without prior experience, causing him to miss early off-site matches while building foundational skills. He officially debuted during the Tokyo joint training camps, where he bonded with players from rival schools and honed his abilities through extra practice. During the Tokyo Spring High preliminaries, he stepped up to fill critical roles when key upperclassmen Kuroo Tetsuro and Yaku Morisuke suffered injuries. After taking part in the legendary national match against Karasuno High School, Lev eventually transitioned to working as a professional fashion model alongside his older sister, Alisa Haiba.
Relationships
Haiba Lev maintains a close bond with his older sister, Alisa Haiba, who affectionately nicknames him Levochka and later shares a professional modeling career with him. On the court, setter Kozume Kenma initially struggled with Lev's unpredictable movement, while team captain Kuroo Tetsuro and libero Yaku Morisuke rigorously train him in defense. His frequent, unintended observations regarding Yaku's height regularly result in swift kicks from the senior libero. Additionally, Lev develops a warm rivalry with Karasuno High School's Shoyo Hinata and receives guidance on jump float serving techniques from Yamaguchi Tadashi.
Trivia
His given name, Lev, translates to lion in Russian. His favorite food is inari sushi. His listed concern in high school was that his team seniors kept trying to give him strange nicknames. After completing high school, he did not pursue professional volleyball, instead taking advantage of his exceptional height and distinct features to work as a professional model alongside his sister.
