Satori Tendou

Overview

Satori Tendou is a character from the manga and anime series Haikyu!!. He is a third-year middle blocker for the Shiratorizawa Academy volleyball team, wearing the number 5 jersey. Renowned by rival teams as the "Guess Monster," he utilizes a unique blocking style based on pure intuition and keen reading of the opponents. Known for his cheerful, friendly demeanor, he serves as a lively mood-maker for his team on and off the court.

Appearance

Tendou features spiky, upright red hair and wide, striking red eyes. On the court, he wears standard sports apparel that includes collared shirts, long-sleeved jackets, and neckties. In his childhood, he sported a neatly trimmed bowl-cut hairstyle rather than his current spiky look.

Personality

Tendou is outgoing, quirky, and filled with playful energy, constantly engaging his teammates to keep spirits high. He demonstrates affection by addressing almost everyone by their given names, including his head coach. Beneath his goofy front and cheerful smiles, his temper can shift abruptly into an intimidating deadpan gaze when irritated. Despite experiencing social rejection in his earlier years, he maintains an exceptionally optimistic attitude.

Abilities

Tendou relies heavily on "Guess Block," a specialized technique where he acts on instant intuition and rapid deduction to intercept attacks. Supported by quick reflexes and high physical capacity, he easily sees through feints and shuts down opponent setups. While devastatingly effective when he gets into a rhythm, the high-risk nature of guessing means his blocks are not guaranteed to succeed every time.

Background

During his elementary and middle school years, Tendou was ostracized by teammates who found his unpredictable playstyle and behavior bizarre, even calling him a monster. He found his place after joining Shiratorizawa Academy, where his unique talents flourished. After completing high school, he retired from competitive volleyball entirely and eventually moved to Paris to pursue a career as a professional chocolatier.

Relationships

Tendou shares a particularly strong friendship with Shiratorizawa's ace, Wakatoshi Ushijima, whom he warmly addresses by his given name and stays in touch with long after graduation. He maintains casual, friendly rapport with teammates such as Eita Semi, Taichi Kawanishi, Tsutomu Goshiki, and Reon Ohira, as well as head coach Tanji Washijo. Conversely, he is generally disliked by the third-year starters of Aoba Johsai High, with the exception of Tooru Oikawa.

Trivia

His surname is believed to be derived from Tendou Onsen in Yamagata Prefecture, while his given name Satori comes from the mythical Japanese folklore monster Satori, which is said to read human minds. When featured in a television documentary profile in his adult life, he invited his high school teammate Wakatoshi Ushijima to appear on the broadcast as his longtime friend.
