Overview
Ikari Yui is a pivotal character in the Neon Genesis Evangelion franchise. She is the mother of the protagonist, Ikari Shinji, and the wife of Ikari Gendou. A brilliant genetic engineering student who studied under Fuyutsuki Kouzou at Kyoto University, she was heavily involved in the early development of the Evangelion units. Although she passed away before the main events of the story begin, her lingering presence and past actions serve as a major driving force behind the narrative and the Human Instrumentality Project.
Appearance
She is a woman with short brown hair and dark eyes. Her signature attire includes a long-sleeved, collared pink shirt worn underneath an open white lab coat, revealing her collarbone. Her facial features and overall appearance closely resemble those of Ayanami Rei, with subtle facial similarities also reflected in her son, Ikari Shinji.
Personality
She possesses a calm, gentle, and highly intelligent disposition. Warm and accepting, she was one of the few people who could see past Ikari Gendou's abrasive exterior, providing him with a sense of peace he had never experienced before. Beneath her serene demeanor lies a resolute strength of character and deep maternal devotion. Driven by her unique philosophical views on life, she was willing to make profound personal sacrifices to ensure a lasting legacy for humanity and a safe future for her son.
Abilities
She possessed exceptional intellectual capabilities in bioengineering, producing research during her university years that deeply impressed her professor. After assimilating with the core of Evangelion Unit-01 during a direct contact experiment, her consciousness remained active inside the mecha. In this state, she exerts influence over Unit-01, triggering powerful berserk states or activating the unit independently to protect her son during critical battles.
Background
While studying at Kyoto University, she met Rokubungi Gendou and later married him, giving birth to their son, Shinji. Joining the Artificial Evolution Laboratory after the Second Impact, she participated directly in the Evangelion development program. In 2004, during a direct contact test with Unit-01, her physical body dissolved as her soul fused with the core. Although attempts to salvage her failed, her spirit remained inside Unit-01, enabling Shinji to synchronize with the machine. Her disappearance drove Gendou to dedicate his entire existence to orchestrating the Human Instrumentality Project just to see her again.
Relationships
She is the beloved wife of Ikari Gendou, who remains entirely devoted to her memory, and the mother of Ikari Shinji, whom she protected even after her physical death. Fuyutsuki Kouzou was her university professor, holding high respect and subtle affection for her. Ayanami Rei is a clone created from her genetic material following the failed attempt to salvage her after the contact experiment.
Trivia
Her given name 'Yui' contains a phonetic connection to 'Rei' and is also a play on the Japanese word for 'sole' or 'only.' Her maiden name varies depending on the continuity: in the original television series, her maiden name was Ikari and Gendou took her surname upon marriage, whereas in the Rebuild of Evangelion film series, her maiden name was Ayanami.
