Overview

A supporting character in the Neon Genesis Evangelion series, Shigeru Aoba is a Second Lieutenant serving as a command center operator at NERV headquarters. He is responsible for monitoring battle conditions and processing data during Angel attacks. In the later entries of the Rebuild of Evangelion film series, he joins the anti-NERV organization WILLE as a bridge operator aboard the flagship AAA Wunder.

Appearance

Shigeru is characterized by his shoulder-length long hair. He is usually dressed in the standard NERV military uniform. In later appearances such as Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo, he retains his signature hairstyle while showing physical signs of aging, including slightly hollowed cheeks and a short goatee.

Personality

A laid-back individual with a strong passion for music, Shigeru often passes his downtime playing air guitar. Although he occasionally screams during terrifying combat situations, he displays resolve under fire, such as sternly scolding a panicked Maya Ibuki during an armed assault. His private life remains mostly unrevealed, and he shows no romantic pursuits among his colleagues.

Abilities

As a command center operator for both NERV and WILLE, Shigeru possesses technical competence in data processing and combat monitoring. Beyond his tactical role, he is an accomplished guitarist capable of filling in for a professional musician during a national tour. He is also qualified to administer physical training programs for Evangelion pilots when senior staff are absent.

Background

During his university years, Shigeru formed a band with ambitions of going professional, but abandoned a music career after being told he lacked guitarist talent, leading him to join NERV. Throughout the Angel attacks, he handled system operations at headquarters. During the events of The End of Evangelion, he met a harrowing end during the Human Instrumentality Project, being swarmed by frightening phantoms of Rei Ayanami before dissolving into LCL. In the Rebuild of Evangelion storyline, he transfers to WILLE to support the fight against NERV.

Relationships

Shigeru works closely with his fellow bridge operators, Maya Ibuki and Makoto Hyuga, executing orders under Kozo Fuyutsuki and Misato Katsuragi. He shares a strong bond of mutual trust with Makoto Hyuga, demonstrated by a silent fist-bump before their final operation. In side media, he interacts with the younger generation by teaching Toji Suzuhara guitar techniques and supervising Shinji Ikari.

Trivia

In the original television series, he is the only member of the main operator trio whose name is never spoken aloud in dialogue. Due to his disturbing fate during the Instrumentality scene in The End of Evangelion, fans frequently note that he lacked a personal romantic interest. Additionally, he famously won first place in a major internet popularity poll due to a coordinated joke vote, and he is the sole NERV staff member with voice samples in the game Super Robot Taisen F.
