Overview
Sandalphon is a powerful creature classified as the Eighth Angel in the anime series Neon Genesis Evangelion. Discovered inside the harsh magma chamber of a volcano, it stands out as an entity capable of adapting to conditions of extreme heat and pressure.
Appearance
Initially found in a human-like embryonic state, Sandalphon rapidly matures into a flat-bodied adult form resembling a prehistoric armored fish. Its fully developed structure features a pair of arm-like appendages and two distinct protuberances situated on its upper surface.
Personality
Sandalphon exhibits no clear intellectual communication or complex temperament. However, upon being disturbed from its dormant state, it displays immediate and intense hostility toward intruders, fiercely attacking any perceived threat.
Abilities
Sandalphon possesses extraordinary environmental durability, allowing it to move and swim at high speeds directly through scorching, high-pressure liquid magma. It also exhibits rapid physical development, enabling it to hatch and complete its maturation in an extremely short period.
Background
Detected deep within the magma of Mount Asama as a dormant embryo, Sandalphon became the target of a capture mission by NERV. During the operation, it unexpectedly awakened and matured into its adult state, engaging Evangelion Unit-02 in violent combat within the lava. It was ultimately destroyed when its body was injected with coolant to exploit thermal expansion, allowing its hardened outer shell to be pierced.
Relationships
Sandalphon directly confronted Asuka Langley Soryu while she piloted Evangelion Unit-02 during the capture attempt. Although the Angel caught her off guard upon awakening, it was ultimately outmaneuvered and defeated by Asuka's tactical ingenuity.
Trivia
The Angel's name is derived from Sandalphon, an angel in Jewish lore associated with unborn children, whose name traditionally carries the meaning of brother.
