Overview

Kinta Sakata is a supporting character in the manga series Dandadan. He is a high school student in class 1-C, attending the same class as Ken Takakura (nicknamed Okarun). Driven by an intense desire to be popular with girls, he is a hardcore otaku who adores mecha anime and two-dimensional heroines. Despite his chuunibyou tendencies and poor physical capabilities, he becomes a vital combatant for the group by using alien Nanoskin technology to materialize giant super robots powered purely by his vivid imagination.

Appearance

Kinta is a somewhat overweight high school boy with short black hair and black eyes. He wears glasses that he secretly constructed out of Nanoskin, which reveal eyes shaped like the number three when removed. During battles or while operating his mecha, he occasionally dons sunglasses. He is also seen wearing an eyepatch and bandages to fake battle injuries. His personal belongings, such as a backpack equipped with vernier thrusters, reflect his passion for robot animation.

Personality

Kinta is a perverted and contrarian teenager who masks his deep-seated insecurities behind chuunibyou delusions, adopting grand self-given titles. His constant dirty jokes earn him the nickname Erosuke from Momo Ayase, though he considers any attention from girls a victory. He takes on a loyal underling persona around attractive girls, calling Momo his eldest sister figure and Aira Shiratori his young lady. Although he harbors jealousy toward handsome guys like Jin Enjoji and acts condescending toward Okarun, he possesses a strong sense of comradeship and unyielding devotion when defending his friends and passion.

Abilities

Though his physical specs are subpar and his spiritual affinity minimal, Kinta possesses an unexcelled imagination developed through years of playing with toys and watching mecha shows, alongside high G-force tolerance. Utilizing the alien material Nanoskin, he transforms it into advanced machinery, most notably the giant super robot Great Kinta, its Buddha-headed Zeta version, powered suits, jetpacks, hoverboards, and functional miniature cameras. While his mecha command formidable attacks like the Rocket Punch, their armor is initially fragile due to his poor grasp of structural physics. He compensates through creative battlefield tactics, such as merging powered suits with Okarun.

Background

Raised on plastic models and mecha anime, Kinta spent his youth training his inner ear on amusement park rides in hopes of one day piloting a real giant robot. He initially approached Okarun to discover his secret to surrounding himself with attractive girls, misinterpreting the group's search for Okarun's missing golden orbs as a trendy conversational topic. Upon being dragged into battles against supernatural beings and space invaders known as the Subterraneans, he acquired Nanoskin technology. Realizing his lifelong dream of commanding a giant mecha, he proved his worth during extraterrestrial invasions, evolving into a dependable ally.

Relationships

He views Ken Takakura (Okarun) as a rival yet respects him as a friend, executing surprisingly coordinated team attacks in battle. He treats Momo Ayase as a boss figure despite her calling him Erosuke, and reveres Aira Shiratori as a refined young lady. Conversely, he harbors intense resentment toward the handsome Jin Enjoji (Jiji). He frequently suffers unprovoked attacks from his classmate Hase. Through battles against foreign threats, he also builds strong bonds of camaraderie with the alien exile Vamola and the technological provider Ludris.

Trivia

His name is believed to be a play on the legendary Sakata Kintoki (Kintaro) combined with the famous comedic 1970s song Kinta no Daibouken. Furthermore, his dialogue, chosen titles, and the designs and attacks of his Great Kinta mecha heavily reference classic mecha franchises such as the Gundam series and various iconic tokusatsu shows.
