Overview
Misa Amane is the heroine of the manga series DEATH NOTE, created by Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata. Popularly known by her idol nickname "Misa-Misa," she is a famous teenage magazine model who expands her career into acting and television personality work. As the "Second Kira," she uses a notebook to carry out her own judgments while harboring an obsessive devotion to Light Yagami—the original Kira who killed her parents' murderer—dedicating herself entirely to aiding his goals.
Appearance
She has a petite build with long blonde hair tied in a two-side-up style, which she later wears down. She frequently wears bold gothic lolita dresses with bare shoulders and detached sleeves, accessorized with jewelry such as earrings, a cross necklace, and polished dark nails. Her eyes visibly change color when utilizing her Shinigami Eyes ability.
Personality
Misa is outgoing, energetic, and highly social, though she often exhibits childish mannerisms, such as referring to herself in the third person. While frequently perceived as ditzy and impulsive, she possesses an unyielding determination when it comes to supporting Light Yagami. Beneath her cheerful exterior lies a ruthless streak, as she shows zero hesitation in eliminating anyone she views as an obstacle or enemy to the person she loves.
Abilities
She possesses a Death Note given to her by the Shinigami Rem, enabling her to kill anyone whose name she writes in it. By trading half of her remaining lifespan, she gained the Shinigami Eyes, which allow her to see any person's real name and lifespan simply by looking at their face. She also demonstrates resourceful acting skills and quick thinking when obtaining information or manipulating targets.
Background
After her parents were murdered by a burglar, the culprit was eventually killed by Kira, leading Misa to revere Kira as her savior. She received a Death Note originally belonging to Gelus—a Shinigami who sacrificed his life to save her—brought to her by the Shinigami Rem. Taking up the mantle of the Second Kira, she contacted Light Yagami by sending broadcast tapes to Sakura TV. Though later detained and interrogated by L, she played a key role in the battle of wits surrounding the notebook.
Relationships
She harbors a fierce, single-minded devotion to Light Yagami, willingly acting as his instrument despite his manipulation. She shares a warm, trusting bond with the Shinigami Rem, who prioritizes Misa's safety above all else. Conversely, she views L as a direct threat to her beloved Light, placing herself in opposition to the detective's investigation.
Trivia
Her design was created to introduce a prominent female character into a male-dominated story, with artist Takeshi Obata incorporating gothic lolita elements to visually mirror the aesthetic of the Shinigami realm. Her surname "Amane" translates to "sound that resonates everywhere" in Japanese.
