Overview

Sayu Yagami is a supporting character in the manga and anime series DEATH NOTE. She is the younger sister of the protagonist Light Yagami and the daughter of police official Soichiro Yagami and his wife Sachiko Yagami. Serving as a representative of ordinary civilian life within the story, she is initially depicted as a cheerful middle school student during the first half of the narrative, later maturing into a university student. Her peaceful existence is tragically shattered when she is kidnapped by a mafia syndicate seeking to extort the Death Note, entangling her in the global conflict surrounding Kira.

Appearance

In the first part of the series, Sayu is a young teenager standing 147 cm tall and weighing 38 kg, featuring dark or brown shoulder-length hair and wearing standard school uniforms or casual youth attire. By the second part, she grows to a height of 163 cm and a weight of 45 kg, taking on the appearance of a refined young woman with a strong fashion sense, particularly regarding shoes. Following her trauma, her final appearance depicts her using a wheelchair propelled by her mother.

Personality

Sayu possesses an open, lively, and optimistic disposition that contrasts sharply with her brother Light Yagami's calculating inner nature. Genuinely loving toward her family, she harbors immense admiration for her father and brother. She is characterized by her profound innocence and empathy, being incapable of cruelty. During her middle school years, she displayed a bubbly personality focused on pop culture and idols while disliking complex topics. Upon reaching adulthood, she transitions into a calm, gentle young woman who avoids alcohol and develops a penchant for collecting shoes.

Abilities

Sayu possesses no supernatural powers, tactical knowledge, or combat abilities, remaining a normal human throughout the series. Her academic skills in junior high school were average, often prompting her to ask Light Yagami for help with homework assignments such as mathematics. As a college student in the second part of the series, she is described as intelligent and refined, successfully pursuing higher education prior to taking a leave of absence due to severe psychological distress.

Background

Born into a comfortable family in Tokyo, Sayu attended private secondary school before entering university. Her quiet life ended abruptly when Mello's mafia organization selected her as a replacement hostage to extort the Death Note from the authorities. Taken to Los Angeles and held captive, she was eventually rescued when her father Soichiro Yagami agreed to the notebook exchange. However, the harrowing ordeal resulted in severe trauma, forcing her to suspend her university studies for medical recovery. She ultimately suffered the devastating loss of both her father and brother to the Kira crisis.

Relationships

Sayu maintains a close relationship with her older brother Light Yagami, often turning to him for help with her studies; Light genuinely values her safety, refusing to eliminate her during her hostage crisis. She holds deep respect for her parents, Soichiro Yagami and Sachiko Yagami, with Soichiro risking everything to trade the Death Note for her survival. In her adult years, she became the subject of quiet romantic interest from her father's police colleague Touta Matsuda. During her youth, she idolized the popular musician Hideki Ryuga.

Trivia

Creators Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata noted that the Yagami family suffered the most tragic destiny in the story, with Ohba singling out Sayu and Sachiko Yagami as the purest characters. In the live-action film adaptation, Sayu actively expresses tearful anger toward Kira's worshipers and survives to honor her late brother's memory. In the live-action television adaptation, her personality is portrayed as slightly sharper toward Light, and a cry for help from her directly prompts Light to use the Death Note for his second kill.
