Ryuk

Overview

Ryuk is a Shinigami from the manga series DEATH NOTE. Rank 6 among the gods of death, he serves as the primary catalyst for the entire story. Out of sheer boredom with the desolate Shinigami realm, he intentionally drops his Death Note into the human world. When Yagami Light picks up the notebook, Ryuk attaches himself to the high schooler as an entertaining observer, taking a neutral position rather than acting as an ally or enemy.

Appearance

Ryuk is a stooped, extraordinarily tall Shinigami dressed in punk-rocker-style black clothing accented with silver jewelry, including rings and earrings. He has short black hair, red eyes, sharp teeth, and long fingers tipped with black fingernails. His distinctive facial features include a wide mouth split to his cheeks and bulging fish-like eyes that lose their pupils and glow solid red in serious moments. He possesses retractable wings resembling those of a bat or crow, which can store items such as pens or apples.

Personality

Driven primarily by a dread of boredom and a desire for entertainment, Ryuk maintains a strictly neutral outlook on human affairs. Despite his terrifying nature, he frequently displays a lighthearted, almost comedic demeanor. However, beneath this casual exterior lies a cold and detached god of death. He rigorously follows rules, contracts, and promises without taking sides. He possesses exceptional mental fortitude and decisive judgment, never hesitating to cut ties when situations resolve.

Abilities

Ryuk is capable of flight by extending the wings on his back, which double as storage space for small items like apples and writing utensils. As a Shinigami, he possesses a Death Note that brings death to humans whose names are inscribed within it. He also carries out contracts and trades associated with the notebook according to the fundamental laws governing Shinigami.

Background

Seeking relief from the monotonous existence of the Shinigami realm, Ryuk deliberately dropped a Death Note into the human realm. After Yagami Light discovered the notebook and initiated his campaign as Kira, Ryuk attached himself to the youth. He continuously observed Light's high-stakes battle of wits against L and the authorities. Although viewed as an eccentric outcast by fellow Shinigami, his antics ultimately sparked interest in the human world among other death gods.

Relationships

Ryuk acts as the neutral companion to Yagami Light, refusing to become a true ally or enemy while watching his attempt to reshape the world. He interacts with other characters like Misa Amane and Near in a casual manner when addressed. Meanwhile, fellow Shinigami such as Rem view his attachment to a human with bemusement and mild disdain.

Trivia

Ryuk has an intense craving for human-world apples, which affect him similarly to tobacco or alcohol. If deprived of them for extended periods, he suffers severe withdrawal symptoms, forcing him to twist his body into unnatural positions or stand on his hands. He is also a fan of video games, occasionally expressing interest in playing titles like Mario Golf.
