Overview

Teru Mikami is a key character in the manga and anime series DEATH NOTE. A young criminal prosecutor working at the Kyoto District Public Prosecutors Office, he is chosen by Light Yagami to receive a Death Note and act as Kira's surrogate, earning the moniker "X-Kira" from Near. Driven by a rigid and radical sense of justice stemming from his past, Mikami fanatically worships Kira as a god and executes judgment on criminals according to what he perceives to be Kira's absolute will.

Appearance

Teru Mikami is depicted with black hair of short to medium length and red eyes. He typically wears formal business attire consisting of a light collared shirt, a dark necktie, a jacket, and black trousers. He is often shown wearing black-rimmed glasses, although trading half his remaining lifespan with Ryuk for the Shinigami Eyes dramatically improves his vision, rendering the glasses functionally unnecessary. During intense moments, such as writing names in the Death Note, his expressions become remarkably exaggerated.

Personality

Possessing an unyielding sense of justice, Mikami adheres to an unforgiving philosophy that all evil and societal disorder must be completely eliminated. Though highly intelligent and calm on the surface, he harbors a fanatical, absolute devotion to Kira and holds a deeply intolerant view toward anyone he deems unrighteous. He leads an intensely methodical lifestyle, following an inflexible weekly schedule that includes attending a fitness gym at the exact same hours on set days without interruption.

Abilities

A graduate of Kyoto University's faculty of law, Mikami possesses high intelligence and extensive legal knowledge. He exhibits exceptional deductive skills, allowing him to anticipate Light Yagami's intentions and act in perfect alignment with Kira's goals even without direct communication. Through his deal with Ryuk, he possesses the Shinigami Eyes, granting him the ability to see any person's true name and remaining lifespan just by looking at their face.

Background

Since childhood, Mikami stood up against bullies, but witnessing the sudden deaths of bad individuals led him to believe that removing evil was the only way to achieve order. He became a prosecutor to enforce his ideals, and when Kira surfaced, he viewed the killings as divine judgment. His public advocacy caught Light Yagami's attention, leading Light to send him a Death Note. However, his extremely rigid habits ultimately allowed the SPK to expose the notebook swap, leading to the collapse of Light's grand plan.

Relationships

Mikami views Light Yagami as a divine being and obeys his will with absolute loyalty, though his conviction is shattered upon witnessing Light's breakdown in the final confrontation. He utilizes Kiyomi Takada as an intermediary and public spokesperson to communicate with Light while avoiding direct surveillance. Meanwhile, Near and his SPK agent Stephen Gevanni closely monitor Mikami's daily movements, ultimately uncovering his routine and swapping the Death Note to thwart Kira.

Trivia

Mikami's fate differs significantly across adaptations: in the manga he dies insane in prison ten days after his arrest, while in the anime he commits suicide by stabbing his own chest with a pen. His dramatic gestures and passionate repetition of his signature phrase while writing names in the notebook became infamous among fans. Visually, his character design was inspired by Taro Kagami, the protagonist of the original DEATH NOTE pilot chapter.
