Overview

Satoshi Houjou is a key character in the sound novel series Higurashi no Naku Koro ni, created by 07th Expansion. He is the older brother of Satoko Houjou and plays a pivotal role in the mysteries surrounding the village of Hinamizawa. Characterized by his mild-mannered demeanor and profound devotion to protecting his sister, Satoshi disappeared a year prior to the arrival of Keiichi Maebara. Within the village, his sudden vanishing during the night of the Watanagashi Festival is remembered as the fourth year's incident of being "spirited away."

Appearance

Satoshi features short yellow hair with a side-parted fringe, sharing the same hair color as his sister Satoko, and has pink, purple, or brown eyes. He has a slender and delicate build, presenting a quiet and mild impression. His standard outfit consists of a short-sleeved white collared shirt worn over a light blue shirt, paired with black trousers and a belt. During his time with the local youth baseball team, he wore a full baseball uniform with a cap, bearing the jersey number 7.

Personality

Satoshi is a quiet, gentle, and somewhat timid boy who prefers indoor activities like reading over sports. When troubled or flustered, he frequently utters a soft muttered sound and has a habit of affectionately patting people on the head. Despite his fragile demeanor, he exhibits intense bravery and self-sacrifice whenever his sister is threatened. Enduring immense strain from home and community prejudice, he pushed himself past his physical and mental limits out of a deep sense of responsibility to protect Satoko.

Abilities

Satoshi was an active player for the Hinamizawa Fighters youth baseball team, holding a solid .300 batting average, though his performance often dipped during actual games due to stage fright. His personalized metal baseball bat, which has his name engraved into the grip, serves as a powerful heavy instrument and plays a prominent role in the story.

Background

Growing up in a troubled home where his surname changed multiple times, Satoshi and his sister were taken in by their aunt and uncle following their parents' death in 1980. Ostracized by the village due to their parents' political stance, Satoshi took on the burden of shielding Satoko from their abusive relatives. While working part-time jobs to buy his sister a birthday present, the compounding stress pushed him into the terminal phase of Hinamizawa Syndrome, leading to the murder of his aunt on the night of the 1982 Watanagashi Festival. He was secretly taken into custody by Dr. Kyousuke Irie to undergo medical treatment in a deep coma.

Relationships

He shares an unbreakable bond with his younger sister Satoko Houjou, who affectionately addresses him as "Nii-nii." Shion Sonozaki fell deeply in love with him after he rescued her from a group of delinquents; his parting request for her to look after Satoko later heavily impacts her actions. Although he never directly meets Keiichi Maebara, Satoshi is viewed as his predecessor, as Keiichi takes over his role among friends and inherits his signature baseball bat. Dr. Kyousuke Irie acted as his baseball manager and primary physician.

Trivia

Satoshi is notably unable to tell the difference between broccoli and cauliflower. His favorite food is karaage (Japanese fried chicken). His engraved metal baseball bat becomes an iconic item throughout the franchise, frequently passed on to Maebara Keiichi and utilized in various major conflicts across different story arcs.
