Overview

Tomitake Jirou is a supporting character in Higurashi no Naku Koro ni. On the surface, he is a freelance photographer who regularly visits the village of Hinamizawa under the guise of photographing wild birds and scenery. In reality, he is a Second Lieutenant in the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force and an auditor dispatched by the secret organization Tokyo to supervise the Irie Institution. Welcomed warmly by the villagers for his friendly demeanor, he plays a pivotal role in the narrative, as events often turn tragic following his fate in each arc.

Appearance

He is a man of muscular build who wears glasses, with brown hair and brown eyes. His outfit consists of a dark green cap, a black sleeveless shirt, green hiking pants, and black boots. He wears dog tags around his neck and is constantly seen carrying a camera with him.

Personality

Tomitake possesses a mild-mannered, sincere, and gentle personality. He interacts with the villagers and young protagonists with an easygoing attitude, earning their respect. Despite his mature role, he can be somewhat naive regarding romance, often being led around by his partner, Takano Miyo. In comedic or festive situations, he reveals an enthusiastic, quirky side, expressing a passionate devotion to photography and eccentric camaraderie.

Abilities

A former marksmanship instructor for a non-conventional warfare unit in the self-defense forces, Tomitake is an exceptional sniper capable of hitting targets accurately even from a fast-moving vehicle on rough roads. He possesses lock-picking skills, able to open simple locks with basic tools. Furthermore, he is physically capable of fighting off multiple armed operatives and holds the official authority to request and command the specialized Banken force during emergencies.

Background

After sustaining an eye injury during his military service, Tomitake transitioned into public relations, which sparked his passion for photography. Under the guise of a bird photographer, he visited Hinamizawa several times a year to inspect the Irie Institution. In most timelines, he becomes the initial victim around the time of the Watanagashi festival, succumbing to terminal Hinamizawa Syndrome after being targeted for refusing Takano Miyo's scheme. However, in the definitive timeline, he survives, assists in exposing the conspiracy, and saves Takano.

Relationships

He is romantically involved with Takano Miyo, whom he loves deeply despite supervising her work. While he often falls victim to her machinations, he ultimately strives to understand her pain and offer her a chance at redemption. He also maintains a lighthearted camaraderie with Maebara Keiichi, Irie Kyousuke, and Ooishi Kuraudo, sharing comical bonds while serving as the official supervisor for Irie Kyousuke.

Trivia

Tomitake Jirou is a pen name used for his photography work, leaving his true given name unrevealed. Because his untimely death triggers the downward spiral of tragedy in nearly every story chapter, fans affectionately refer to him as the Time Signal. Creator Ryukishi07 once jokingly dubbed Tomitake the true heroine of the story, as his survival is a prerequisite for reaching a happy ending.
