Overview
Shinmon Benimaru is a character from Fire Force who serves as the Battalion Commander of Special Fire Force Company 7. Revering the pre-disaster traditions of the region, he rejects the authority of the Tokyo Empire and the Holy Sol Temple, dedicating himself entirely to protecting the town of Asakusa and its residents. As the only known Composite Fire Soldier capable of simultaneously wielding Third Generation ignition and Second Generation flame manipulation, he is celebrated as the strongest Fire Soldier. Known locally as the Destruction King of Asakusa due to his explosive method of putting Infernals to rest, he remains a deeply revered leader among his people.
Appearance
Benimaru is a 22-year-old man with short black hair featuring strands that fall between his eyes, paired with striking red irises. His most prominent visual distinction is the unique marking inside each eye—a white circle in his right iris and a cross in his left—both of which glow when he activates his fire powers. He dresses in traditional Japanese attire reminiscent of Edo-period firefighters and frequently carries a massive matoi standard, which he utilizes both as a weapon and as a vehicle for aerial transport.
Personality
On the surface, Benimaru comes across as blunt, unsociable, and perpetually scowling, yet he possesses a deeply caring and honorable Edokko spirit. He despises arrogant individuals while taking a liking to entertaining and genuine people. Although he enjoys martial arts, he strongly dislikes mathematics and sweet foods. He demonstrates a surprisingly attentive side through his daily routine of styling the hair of the young twins, Hinata and Hikage. While normally stoic, consuming even a small amount of alcohol completely alters his temperament, turning his stern expression into a radiant smile that earned him the nickname King of Cheerfulness.
Abilities
Benimaru is the sole known Composite Fire Soldier, possessing the power to ignite his own flames as a Third Generation while simultaneously manipulating external fire as a Second Generation. He can project fire from his hands, detonate targets with his fingertips, or launch his ignited matoi as high-speed projectiles and flight mounts. In pure physical combat, he boasts extraordinary stamina and martial prowess even without relying on pyrokinesis. He is a master of the Iai Chop martial arts style, which includes First Form Kagetsu, Second Form Gekko, Third Form Akebono, Fourth Form Sekijitsu, Fifth Form Sokujitsu, Sixth Form Tokei, and Seventh Form Nichirin. He also wields the explosive Akatsuki technique passed down from Sagamiya Konro, along with his ultimate variation, Nichirin Akatsuki.
Background
Orphaned as a child, Benimaru was taken in by Shinmon Hibachi, the master of the Asakusa firefighters, who trained him harshly as his eventual successor. Failing to master the Nichirin technique before Hibachi's death left a lasting emotional burden on him. Upon becoming Battalion Commander of Special Fire Force Company 7, he explicitly retained his pre-Empire name order, Shinmon Benimaru, refusing to adopt the official naming structure of the Tokyo Empire. In the line of duty, he single-handedly destroyed a Demon Infernal threatening Asakusa, provided rigorous training to Shinra Kusakabe and Arthur Boyle of Company 8, and collaborated with Joker in an assault on the Holy Sol Temple.
Relationships
Sagamiya Konro serves as Company Commander of Company 7 and acts as a trusted senior brother figure to Benimaru, having passed down his signature Akatsuki technique to him. Shinmon Hibachi was Benimaru's adoptive father and strict mentor, whose expectations heavily shaped his development. Though initial misunderstandings caused him to fight Shinra Kusakabe of Special Fire Force Company 8, Benimaru later established a strong mentorship with Shinra and Arthur Boyle, helping them hone their flame abilities. He also formed a temporary alliance with Joker to infiltrate the Holy Sol Temple headquarters.
Trivia
His name is derived from Shinmon Tatsugoro, a historical firefighter and chivalrous figure from the late Edo period. Although the Tokyo Empire officially registers his name in western format as Benimaru Shinmon, his rejection of the Empire's solar faith leads him to strictly use the traditional ordering of Shinmon Benimaru. His dramatic personality shift when drinking alcohol, which replaces his permanent scowl with an unnervingly bright smile, has earned him the moniker King of Cheerfulness.
