Overview
Blathers is a character featured throughout Nintendo's Animal Crossing series, debuting in Animal Crossing+. He serves as the head curator and director of the local museum, overseeing donations and educating visitors. He has a younger sister named Celeste, who specializes in astronomy. Known for his polite, gentle demeanor and mild-mannered cowardice, he routinely dozes off on his feet during daylight hours due to his nocturnal nature.
Appearance
Blathers is a short, anthropomorphic owl modeled after a horned owl. He has brown feathers, short hair, and purple eyes. His signature outfit consists of a green bowtie worn around his neck, paired with a neat long-sleeved shirt.
Personality
Blathers is polite, well-mannered, and serious, yet possesses a lighthearted sense of humor. Despite his relatively young academic background, others often perceive him as surprisingly mature. He exhibits immense passion for fossils and paleontology, causing his usually refined speech to shift into excited, casual outbursts when discussing them. Conversely, despite being a bird, he has a severe phobia of insects and dislikes crustaceans due to childhood trauma, visibly panicking whenever one is shown to him. Additionally, his knowledge of marine life frequently includes remarks on how tasty they are.
Abilities
Blathers possesses broad academic knowledge, allowing him to inspect and lecture on fossils, aquatic life, and artwork. His expertise in paleontology is particularly vast, enabling him to deliver highly detailed yet easily understandable explanations that earn praise even from real-world biological researchers. He holds an official fossil certification.
Background
In earlier games, Blathers lacked an immediate fossil certification and had to mail specimens away for evaluation; later in the series, he acquired his license to examine and retain donations on the spot. Outside his home series, he has appeared as a trophy, sticker, and support spirit in the Super Smash Bros. franchise. He also provided biological commentary for real-life marine species during a collaboration event at Yokohama Hakkeijima Sea Paradise.
Relationships
He is the elder brother of Celeste, a female owl who pursues astronomy. Though some notice a stark contrast between them, both siblings share a strong passion for academic studies.
Trivia
His Japanese name Fuuta comes from 'hoot', the sound an owl makes, while his English name Blathers is derived from the word 'blather', referencing his tendency to talk at length. Separately from Blathers and his sister, normal non-anthropomorphic owls also exist within the Animal Crossing world.
