Overview
Tommy is a tanuki character introduced in the debut title of Nintendo's Animal Crossing series. As the younger twin brother of Timmy, he serves as an apprentice and employee under Tom Nook, working alongside his brother to manage various retail establishments across the series. He is widely recognized for his distinct speech quirk of quietly echoing the end of his twin's sentences.
Appearance
Tommy is a tanuki with physical features nearly identical to his twin brother, featuring pink paw pads on the soles of his feet. In Animal Crossing: New Horizons, he carries a small flag and possesses a slightly higher voice pitch than his brother. He consistently wears matching outfits with Timmy. Depending on the game and store stage, his wardrobe includes a light blue jacket, dark blue apron, striped shirt, pale yellow apron, dark orange vest, or a dark green patterned aloha shirt. When operating a fully upgraded shop, he wears a light yellow apron over a blue shirt, and wears a pale blue cap with a rugby shirt at the auto campsite.
Personality
While usually seen alongside his twin, Tommy possesses a reliable nature and a subtle competitive streak. He occasionally feels a quiet sense of sibling rivalry regarding his status as the younger twin, though he maintains a good relationship with his brother. He has a habit of repeating the trailing words of Timmy's sentences in a softer tone, and when speaking alone, he tends to awkwardly mumble Tom Nook's signature verbal tick.
Abilities
Working in tandem with his brother, Tommy demonstrates competent retail skills, managing shop operations, inventory, and customer service across various business formats ranging from market stalls to large department stores.
Background
First appearing in the original Animal Crossing when Tom Nook's store upgraded to a department store, Tommy worked as a retail clerk alongside his brother. In Animal Crossing: New Leaf and Pocket Camp, the twins ran their own independent shop and market stall. In Animal Crossing: New Horizons, he joins Nook Inc. to assist with the deserted island getaway package before establishing a standalone Nook's Cranny on the island.
Relationships
Timmy is Tommy's elder twin brother, acting as his constant companion and business partner. Tom Nook serves as his boss and mentor, under whom Tommy learns the ins and outs of running a business.
Trivia
Tommy's personal motto is 'Business and rivalry do not mix.' Regarding sweet bean paste preferences, he favors the coarse tsubuan variety. According to Tom Nook, Tommy can be identified by a mole on his right wrist, though Tom Nook himself often gets confused, leaving the detail uncertain.
