Overview

Jagi is a prominent antagonist from the manga Fist of the North Star and its derivative works. Raised alongside Raoh, Toki, and Kenshiro as the third of the four Hokuto brothers, he lacks the noble lineage of the Hokuto clan. Consumed by jealousy and resentment over Kenshiro being chosen as the sole successor of Hokuto Shinken, he carves seven scars into his own chest to impersonate his younger brother, terrorizing the post-apocalyptic wasteland as a ruthless and treacherous rogue.

Appearance

Jagi is a muscular man who wears a spiked shoulder pad over a leather vest left open to expose his chest, accompanied by fingerless gloves and pants. On his chest are seven self-inflicted scars. His head and face are heavily disfigured, held together with metal fittings and tubing to maintain blood flow, and fully concealed under a black iron helmet featuring gold accents. In his youth prior to his disfigurement, he had spiky, medium-length hair, which is depicted as blonde in the animated adaptations.

Personality

Jagi possesses a rigid and distorted conviction that younger siblings should never surpass their elders. Driven by vanity and deep-seated envy toward Kenshiro, he disregards martial arts etiquette without hesitation, relying on dirty tricks, firearms, and concealed weapons to gain the upper hand. Cruel and ruthless to anyone who crosses him or challenges his superiority, he nevertheless maintains a odd rapport with his followers when left unprovoked.

Abilities

Though trained in Hokuto Shinken and capable of executing South Star techniques, Jagi's martial arts skills fall far short of his fellow disciples. Instead, he heavily incorporates conventional weapons into combat, including a sawed-off shotgun, hidden blow darts concealed in his helmet, gasoline, and rocket launchers. His signature moves include Hokuto Rakangeki, a flurry of rapid stabs mixed with surprise needle attacks; Hokuto Senjusatsu, an aerial barrage of hand strikes; and Nanto Jarougeki, a slashing hand-strike trick borrowed from Nanto Seiken. He also possesses the technical knowledge to strike his own pressure points to counter control effects.

Background

Adopted and trained by Ryuken alongside his fellow disciples, Jagi was outraged when the title of Hokuto Shinken successor was conferred upon Kenshiro. He attacked Kenshiro to force his resignation, only to be utterly defeated and left with a hideously deformed head. Fueled by vengeance, he manipulated Shin into kidnapping Yuria and later slaughtered Rei's parents while abducting his sister. Establishing a base in an urban tower, he terrorized surrounding areas while posing as Kenshiro until the real successor tracked him down and eliminated him.

Relationships

Ryuken is his adoptive father and master. Raoh and Toki are his elder martial brothers, to whom he sought support when disputing the succession. Kenshiro is his younger martial brother and the central object of his intense hatred and impersonation. He manipulated Shin into taking Yuria from Kenshiro, and he incurred the wrath of Rei by murdering his parents and abducting his sister Airi. In certain adaptation storylines, he allies with the impersonator Amiba.

Trivia

Despite his despicable actions, Jagi remains an iconic villain celebrated for his famous demand for victims to speak his name. Both original creators, Buronson and Tetsuo Hara, have cited him as one of their favorite characters to depict. He stars as the main protagonist in the spin-off manga Gokuaku no Hana. To commemorate the series' 40th anniversary, a bronze bust of Jagi was officially erected inside Sakudaira Station in Saku, Nagano, the hometown of writer Buronson.
