Overview

Souther is a major antagonist in Hokuto no Ken, representing the Star of Leadership among the Nanto Rokusei Ken. As the sole successor of the powerful Nanto Ho-oh Ken fighting style, he proclaims himself the Holy Emperor and seeks total dominance over the post-apocalyptic wasteland. Known for his supreme confidence and formidable martial prowess, he also serves as the main protagonist in the spin-off series Hokuto no Ken: Ichigo Aji.

Appearance

Souther is characterized by short blonde hair and thick eyebrows. His attire includes shoulder armor, a white cape, purple pants, knee pads, and boots.

Personality

Souther possesses immense self-pride and treats others with disdain. Traumatized by the accidental killing of his master during his succession trial, he came to believe that love and compassion lead only to sorrow, prompting him to disavow affection entirely. He upholds a rigid sense of monarchical pride that rejects retreat, surrender, or regret, acting as a ruthless ruler willing to exploit others for his goals.

Abilities

Souther is the sole master of Nanto Ho-oh Ken, a purely offensive fighting style that lacks defensive stances. His key advantage in battle is a congenital condition that reverses his internal organs, blood flow, and pressure points, rendering standard Hokuto Shinken strikes ineffective against him. His signature moves include Kyokusei Juji Ken, a swift slash that carves a cross onto the opponent's chest, and Tenshou Juuji Hou, an ultimate aerial technique where he takes a wing-like stance to dodge attacks and strike.

Background

Orphaned as an infant, Souther was raised with great care by Ohgai, the previous successor of Nanto Ho-oh Ken. During the mandatory single-successor trial, a blindfolded Souther unknowingly killed Ohgai in combat. Traumatized by his mentor's death, he renounced love and established himself as the Holy Emperor, forcing children to construct the Holy Cross Pyramid as a shrine for Ohgai. After executing his rival Shu and initially defeating Kenshiro due to his reversed anatomy, Souther was defeated in their rematch once his secret was uncovered, dying beside his master's body as he recalled the warmth of love.

Relationships

Ohgai was Souther's master and adoptive father, whose tragic death shattered Souther's emotional stability. Kenshiro, the successor of Hokuto Shinken, served as his primary adversary in two fierce battles. Souther maintained a hostile relationship with Shu of the Nanto Jinsei, ultimately executing him for leading a resistance. Furthermore, his reversed internal structure caused Raoh to treat Souther with extreme caution.

Trivia

The Star of Leadership associated with Souther is also known as the Pole Star, destined to rule over the other Nanto constellations. In the official spin-off series Hokuto no Ken: Ichigo Aji, Souther is portrayed as a highly eccentric comedic character who exhibits an exaggerated terror toward turban-wearing youths carrying concealed weapons.
