Overview

Shu is a major supporting character in Hokuto no Ken (Fist of the North Star), serving as the successor of the Nanto Hakurou Ken martial art style. Designated as the Star of Benevolence among the Nanto Six Sacred Fists, he leads a resistance group against the tyrannical Holy Emperor Souther to protect vulnerable civilians and children in the post-apocalyptic wasteland. Having sacrificed his own eyesight in his youth to spare a young Kenshiro, he is widely respected as a noble blind warrior.

Appearance

Shu is a muscular man with medium-to-long greyish-white or blue hair. Before losing his vision, he possessed red eyes; following his self-inflicted blindness, his eyes remain closed with noticeable facial scars across his eyelids. He wears a dark, short-sleeved shirt paired with matching black trousers, secured by suspenders and a brown leather belt. His combat attire includes heavy armor pads over his shoulders and protective bracers on his arms.

Personality

Embodying the Star of Benevolence, Shu possesses a deeply compassionate and self-sacrificing nature. He prioritizes the safety and future of children above all else, willing to endure immense personal suffering to protect the innocent. While steadfast and resolute when confronting tyranny, Shu treats his allies and followers with warmth and nobility, earning unconditional loyalty and profound respect from those around him.

Abilities

As the grandmaster of Nanto Hakurou Ken (South Star White Heron Fist), Shu specializes in acrobatic footwork and devastating kick techniques. His signature moves include Nanto Rekkyaku Kuubu, a flurry of aerial spinning kicks that can slice through enemies, and Nanto Rekkyaku Zanjin, an inverted spinning sweep that decapitates surrounding foes. He is also skilled in Yuugen Sho, an illusionary palm technique that creates multiple phantom hand images to confuse opponents before delivering a lethal blow.

Background

In his youth, Shu defeated a young Kenshiro during a dojo challenge. To prevent Kenshiro from being executed under Nanto rules, Shu gouged out his own eyes to spare the boy's life. Though previously aligned with Souther, Shu abandoned him after witnessing his cruelty and formed a resistance movement to protect children enslaved to construct the Holy Cross Mausoleum. Years later, Shu reunited with the adult Kenshiro. After his son Shiba sacrificed himself for Kenshiro, Shu confronted Souther directly. Souther severed Shu's leg tendons and forced him to carry the mausoleum's massive capstone to the summit under threat of hostage execution. Pierced by arrows and Souther's spear, Shu miraculously regained his vision moments before dying, catching one final glance of Kenshiro before being crushed under the heavy stone.

Relationships

Shu shares a profound bond with Kenshiro, having sacrificed his eyesight in the past to save Kenshiro's life and later placing his hopes for the world in him. His son, Shiba, inherited Shu's noble spirit and gave his life to rescue Kenshiro from captivity. Souther, once Shu's associate, became his archenemy due to his brutal tyranny over the wasteland. Shu also maintained a close friendship with Rei, the successor of Nanto Suichou Ken.

Trivia

Shu's visual concept and character archetype as a blind martial artist are said to be patterned after the iconic blind martial arts master portrayed by actor David Carradine. Beyond the main series, Shu appears frequently in comedy spin-off media such as DD Hokuto no Ken and Hokuto no Ken Ichigo Aji.
