Overview

Kunigami Rensuke is a key character in the soccer manga and anime series Blue Lock. Originally competing as a forward for Team Z during the initial phase of the titular program, he is distinguished by his passionate sportsmanship and adherence to fair play. Aiming to become a soccer superhero, his physical power and left-footed shooting make him an indispensable offensive presence. Following his elimination in the Second Selection, he undergoes a grueling wildcard rehabilitation project, returning with a drastically changed appearance and an egoistic mindset.

Appearance

Kunigami is a tall young man standing 188 centimeters tall with short, spiky orange hair and orange eyes. He possesses a highly muscular and athletic physique developed through constant training. During matches, he wears athletic sportswear including jerseys and jackets. After surviving the Wild Card program, his visual appearance alters noticeably, featuring prominent dark circles beneath his eyes and a far more stern, exhausted facial expression.

Personality

Initially, Kunigami is righteous, honest, and reliable, earning strong trust from his teammates as the moral anchor of Team Z. He values playing by the rules and treats others with sincere chivalry, though he gets flustered when receiving praise. Raised alongside an older and younger sister, he possesses a surprisingly gentle side. However, after emerging from the Wild Card experiment, his demeanor turns cynical, taciturn, and unsociable, casting aside his former superhero ideals while still occasionally exhibiting subtle concern for former comrades.

Abilities

Kunigami relies on his strong physical strength and high ball-retention capability to overpower opponents. His signature weapon is a devastating left-footed middle shot, capable of unleashing long-range strikes including non-spinning knuckleballs and jumping direct volleys. Through the Wild Card training designed to replicate the body of top player Noel Noa, he acquired complete ambidexterity, enabling him to shoot with equal precision and power using his right leg.

Background

Hailing from Akita Prefecture, Kunigami spent his youth isolated due to his exceptionally tall build until an incident defending his family prompted him to direct his physical gifts into structured sports. He played for Seido Gakuin High School before entering Blue Lock. In the First Selection, he helped lead Team Z forward. During the Second Selection, after losing to Shidou Ryusei, he chose to enter the unknown Wild Card door instead of leaving, emerging as the sole survivor forced to internalize a cynical philosophy to survive.

Relationships

Kunigami formed a close bond early on with Isagi Yoichi, assisting each other on the pitch and sharing meals. During the Second Selection, he teamed up with Chigiri Hyoma and Mikage Reo, acting as an encouraging pillar for Reo when their squad split. He holds a bitter rivalry with Shidou Ryusei, the striker responsible for his initial elimination, and later models his physical adaptions on top international striker Noel Noa.

Trivia

His personal motto is to act fair and square. If he had not pursued a career in soccer, he believes he would have become a professional wrestler to utilize his muscular frame as a hero. His favorite food is wakame soup, while he intensely dislikes cereal soaked in milk. Outside of training, he enjoys running along coastlines and watching action cinema.
