Overview

Martha Marriott is a supporting character in the manga series SPY x FAMILY. She is a 63-year-old female butler employed by the Blackbell household, primarily tasked with attending to and chauffeuring the family's young daughter, Becky Blackbell. Anya Forger, Becky's close friend, casually refers to her as "Becky's person." Behind her calm and polished demeanor, Martha possesses exceptional physical agility and sharp situational awareness.

Appearance

Martha is an elderly woman depicted with short blonde hair. Official illustrations highlight her alongside classic furniture items, such as Hans Wegner's pp550 Peacock Chair and an Andreas Tuck round coffee table, accompanied by accessories like a tea set and letters. She is featured on the cover of Volume 15 of the manga, with artwork on the back inside cover displaying her youthful appearance. In her younger years, she was known for changing her hairstyle according to the fashion of the time.

Personality

Martha maintains a professional, composed presence as a butler, offering pragmatic wisdom and guidance whenever necessary. She remains level-headed even when her employer, Byron Blackbell, loses his composure, readily pointing out irrational ideas. Her view on romance is realistic and detached; she frequently reacts with internal skepticism toward Becky's crush on Loid Forger. When interacting with her long-time acquaintance Henry Henderson, she drops her formal demeanor and speaks in a straightforward, casual manner.

Abilities

Having served on the front lines of the Women's Defense Army in her youth, Martha is a seasoned military veteran. Her combat reflexes and sharpness are immediately recognized by Loid Forger. During the Eden Academy bus hijacking incident, she demonstrated her martial prowess by swiftly neutralizing the fleeing perpetrator Vadim with a taser to secure Anya's safety. Additionally, she was a skilled ballerina in her youth, capable of returning to the stage even after suffering wartime injuries.

Background

Martha entered Eden Academy in her youth and earned the title of Imperial Scholar, developing feelings for Henry Henderson during her school days. After an air raid destroyed the ballet company she dreamed of joining, she enlisted in the Women's Defense Army. She survived harrowing frontline battles, but upon her return, she discovered Henry had recently married another woman due to family pressure. Masking her grief, she congratulated him and chose to remain single for the rest of her life, later serving in the West-East War before taking up her duties at the Blackbell estate.

Relationships

Martha shares a bond of deep trust with her charge, Becky Blackbell. She maintains a close, long-standing friendship with Henry Henderson, speaking informally with him as an equal. She harbored profound respect for his late wife, Lucia, who encouraged Martha's return to ballet, and continues to visit her grave. Martha also shares a connection with her former classmate Donna Schlag, another fellow Imperial Scholar, and is acquainted with Yor Forger and Franky Franklin.

Trivia

Martha originally aspired to be a professional ballerina, and Henry's early praise of her technique as "elegant" brought them together. Upon hearing the tragic details of Martha's past unrequited love, Becky was moved to tears and gained deep admiration for her. Martha's resilience is further highlighted by her survival of brutal battlefield conditions where she had initially been presumed dead.
