Overview
Yuri Briar is a supporting character in the manga and anime series SPY×FAMILY. He is the younger brother of Yor Forger by seven years. Publicly, he presents himself as a promising young diplomat working for the Ostanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, but in reality, he is a twenty-year-old second lieutenant in the State Security Service, Ostania's secret police. Driven by a deep commitment to safeguard the country where his sister resides, he actively hunts down anti-government elements and searches for the elite Westalian spy known as Twilight.
Appearance
Yuri is a youthful-looking young man with short black hair featuring strands falling between his eyes, along with distinct red eyes. When exuding intense hostility, his eyes narrow into a sharp spindle shape. In his official capacity at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, he wears a grey suit, collared white shirt, and necktie. During secret police duties, he dons a green military uniform with a matching cap. He also wears black gloves and carries concealed equipment, including a handgun, handcuffs, and communication devices.
Personality
Yuri possesses an extreme sister complex, harboring an overwhelming devotion to Yor Forger. Whenever his sister is involved, he entirely loses his rational judgment, praising her dangerously terrible cooking even while experiencing severe physical revulsion, and naively believing her flimsiest excuses. While his office locker is filled with photos of Yor and he displays little interest in other people, he is polite to his superiors and harbors a compassionate side toward the families of criminals. In his secret police duties, he can be severe and ruthless, yet he remains somewhat naive and childish. He has poor tolerance for alcohol, quickly becoming intoxicated and unruly after a single glass of wine.
Abilities
Yuri is an academic prodigy who skipped grades to enter university at age fourteen, subsequently securing a position in the secret police due to his exceptional intellect. He possesses outstanding observational and tracking capabilities as an interrogator. Owing to years of enduring Yor's monstrous physical strength and toxic cooking, he developed extraordinary physical durability and vitality, allowing him to survive being struck by a truck after four sleepless days with minimal injury. Although his combat capabilities are formidable, his lack of field experience occasionally leads to missteps, and his domestic skills in cooking, cleaning, and laundry are exceptionally poor.
Background
Having lost his parents during the Second East-West War, Yuri was raised solely by his elder sister, Yor Forger. Deeply moved by her sacrifices to support him, he dedicated himself to rigorous studies to ensure her happiness, achieving entry into university at the age of fourteen. After graduating, he joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs before being recruited into the State Security Service roughly one year prior to the story. He kept his role as a secret police officer hidden from Yor to avoid worrying her. Upon learning of Yor's sudden marriage, he visited the Forger household in utter shock, where Loid Forger immediately discerned his true occupation.
Relationships
Yuri adores his sister, Yor Forger, prioritizing her happiness above all else. He harbors intense jealousy toward his brother-in-law, Loid Forger, whom he informally refers to as "Lotty." While constantly seeking an opportunity to arrest Loid out of spite, Yuri remains unaware that Loid is actually the master spy Twilight. He interacts begrudgingly with his adoptive niece, Anya Forger, whom he nicknames "Chihuahua Girl," yet he assists her with studying and covertly protects her during dangerous incidents. Within the State Security Service, he maintains professional ties with his superiors, Lieutenant Chadwick Curtis and Director Wiman Wilker, as well as his subordinate Chloe.
Trivia
The concept for Yuri's character furniture motif incorporates the iconic Barcelona Chair designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. Additionally, his organization, the Ostanian State Security Service (SSS), is modeled after the historic East German Ministry for State Security, commonly known as the Stasi. During the early planning stages of the manga, the creator considered several distinct ideas for characters who would pursue Twilight before deciding to merge the secret police officer and younger brother archetypes into a single character.
