Appearance
Mendez is a giant standing over two meters tall, characterized by his bald head, long full beard, and a glass left eye. In the remake, he wears a fedora hat and a trench coat. Upon mutating, his abdomen opens up to reveal a centipede-like elongated spine with sharp claws and twin dorsal tentacles. In his second mutated form, his lower body separates, leaving his upper torso swinging from overhead beams via scissor-like tentacles.
Personality
Under the influence of the cult, Mendez exhibits absolute fanaticism towards Osmund Saddler. Originally a highly diligent and compassionate leader who genuinely cared for the villagers and taught local children, his infection transformed him into a cold-blooded zealot who ruthlessly sacrifices his own people to fulfill cult orders.
Abilities
Empowered by the Plaga inside him, Mendez possesses extreme superhuman strength, capable of lifting an adult male by one hand and bending metal doorknobs effortlessly. He exhibits high durability against gunfire and explosions. When mutated, his extendable spine grants him high reach, while his powerful tentacles allow him to swing across rafters and hurl heavy objects such as burning debris or oil drums.
Background
Before the cult's arrival, Mendez was a dedicated leader who improved the village's infrastructure by setting up fish farming, introducing motorboats, and building a blacksmith shop. After accepting the Plaga infection, he became a puppet for Saddler, enforcing defense works and causing food shortages for the cult's sake. He relentlessly pursues Leon S. Kennedy and Ashley Graham until his eventual defeat inside a slaughterhouse.
Relationships
Mendez serves Osmund Saddler with absolute loyalty as part of the Los Illuminados leadership. He acts as an antagonist to Leon S. Kennedy, Luis Serra, and Ashley Graham, viewing them as intruders or targets to be captured, and crosses paths with Ada Wong during her covert operations.
Trivia
The glass eye dropped upon his defeat served as a key item for an iris scanner to unlock a gate in the original game, whereas in the remake it functions as a sellable treasure.
