Overview

Minami Hokutouzai is a supporting character in the manga and anime series Dr. STONE. Before humanity's petrification, she worked as a professional journalist. Initially revived by the Tsukasa Empire for her extensive network and intelligence-gathering skills, she was put in charge of selecting candidates for revival. After the war, she joined the Kingdom of Science, serving as an official record keeper and photographer who documents the rebuilding of civilization.

Appearance

Minami is a glamorous woman with long blonde hair reminiscent of Marilyn Monroe, brown eyes, and a model-like physique. Her attire and accessories feature distinctive elements, including patches and cat-ear decorations. After obtaining a camera in the Stone World, she is frequently seen carrying it around.

Personality

Minami is a proud journalist who adheres to a strict professional code, refusing to rely on her physical attractiveness for scoops. Disillusioned with modern society's economic burdens, such as paying high rent from hard-earned wages, she deeply admires Tsukasa Shishio. Despite her general loyalty, she shows a resourceful and shrewd side, notably hoarding a flask of revival fluid for personal leverage. While she often expresses irritation toward Ryusui Nanami, she remains dedicated and productive when given tasks.

Abilities

Minami possesses exceptionally broad knowledge of talented individuals across various fields, enabling her to locate and select optimal candidates for revival. She is fluent in English, acting as a key translator during international expeditions. Her skill set also includes photography, acting as the primary historian for technological achievements, as well as broadcasting and news reporting skills suitable for television hosting and media work.

Background

Minami was petrified during a street interview in Japan 3700 years ago. Revived by Tsukasa Shishio, she served the Tsukasa Empire by identifying key figures for unpetrification, including Hyoga, Ukyo Saionji, and Ryusui Nanami. After the confrontation between the two factions, she integrated into the Kingdom of Science. She traded a secretly saved bottle of revival fluid to Senku Ishigami in exchange for a custom daguerreotype camera, making her the official photographer documenting their scientific progress. Later, she joined the American expedition as an interpreter and eventually became a news anchor for Ryusui TV in the reconstructed society.

Relationships

Minami holds Tsukasa Shishio in high regard, having been a massive fan of his since before the petrification. She shares a contentious dynamic with Ryusui Nanami, often feeling annoyed by his personality, yet frequently ends up working under his initiatives, such as acting as an anchor for Ryusui TV. She relies on Senku Ishigami for her photographic equipment and works closely alongside the Kingdom of Science to document his inventions.

Trivia

Her name is a pun based on the cardinal directions in Japanese (North, East, West, South). When translated into English, their initial letters spell out 'NEWS,' which she felt was a signs of destiny drawing her to the journalism profession.
