Overview
Paul Greyrat is a major character in the light novel series Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation. He is the father of the protagonist Rudeus Greyrat and a former S-rank adventurer who led the renowned party Fangs of the Black Wolf. Born into the prestigious Notos Greyrat noble family of the Asura Kingdom, he fled his strict household in his youth and eventually became a resident knight in Buena Village within the Fittoa Region. Though flawed and self-indulgent, he is characterized by his profound devotion and sense of responsibility toward his family.
Appearance
Paul is a handsome man with brown hair and green eyes. He wears his hair short with a single side ponytail. A notable visual feature is a tear mole under his left eye, a trait inherited by his eldest son Rudeus Greyrat. Physically, he possesses a muscular build with visible veins on his arms. In combat, he wears body armor along with gauntlets, bandages, tight-fitting clothes, and white pants.
Personality
Paul is free-spirited, frivolous, and historically a womanizer who frequently caused romantic troubles in his youth. Although his self-centered tendencies often created friction with others, his relationship with Zenith Greyrat awakened a desire for a peaceful family life and adult responsibility. However, he remains emotionally vulnerable, prone to drenching his anxieties in alcohol when pushed to his limits. While clumsy as an educator and prone to missteps with his children, he possesses an intense sense of paternal obligation and unconditional affection for his family.
Abilities
Paul is an accomplished swordsman who attained the Advanced tier in all three major sword styles: Sword God, Water God, and North God styles. He utilizes the Sword God Style's Silent Blade and the Water God Style's fundamental parrying counter technique Flow. Though he personally dislikes North God Style, it is his most natural fit; when fighting seriously, he employs its beast-like dual-wielding techniques, including the Four-Legged Stance. His equipment features a durable replica of the Holy Sword of Saint Millis and an un-named magic sword with armor-piercing capabilities that slices through hard materials with ease.
Background
Born into the Notos Greyrat family, Paul fled home at age twelve following conflicts with his father. He formed the S-rank party Fangs of the Black Wolf, but retired from adventuring after Zenith became pregnant, settling as a village knight in Buena. Following the Fittoa Territory Teleportation Disaster, which scattered his household, he established a rescue organization to track down survivors. After emotionally reuniting with Rudeus in Millishion, he traveled to the Begaritt Continent to rescue Zenith from the Teleportation Labyrinth. During the battle against the Manatite Hydra, Paul sacrificed his life to shield Rudeus, dying at the age of thirty-five.
Relationships
Paul shared a complex bond with his eldest son Rudeus Greyrat, treating him with both awe for his genius and camaraderie like a peer, before forging a deeper parental love following their confrontation in Millishion. He loved his first wife Zenith Greyrat immensely, while also accommodating his maid-turned-second-wife Lillia Greyrat. He was deeply protective of his eldest daughter Norn Greyrat and cared for his younger daughter Aisha Greyrat. His former Fangs of the Black Wolf party members—Geese Nukadia, Ghislaine Dedoldia, Elinalise Dragonroad, and Tallhand—retained complicated yet enduring ties with him long after their disbandment.
Trivia
The armor-piercing magic sword Paul purchased on the Begaritt Continent was later repurposed by Rudeus as weaponry for his Magic Armor. Following his death, his beloved main sword was handed down to his daughter Norn, while his combat armor was kept as a display in Zenith's room. His original noble family surname, Notos, originates from the Greek deity of the south wind.
