Samurai Calibur

Overview

Samurai Calibur is a supporting character in the anime series SSSS.GRIDMAN and related works. He is a member of the Neon Genesis Junior High Students, a four-person group that aids Gridman. In truth, he is the human form of Gridman Calibur, a massive sword that serves as an Assist Weapon for Gridman. Despite his code name, he is not a samurai by profession. Acting as a silent guardian around Yuta Hibiki and Rikka Takarada, he plays a crucial role in battle by transforming into Gridman's primary blade.

Appearance

Samurai Calibur is a 33-year-old man standing 182 cm tall and weighing 65 kg, with black hair and blue eyes. He is defined visually by a severe hunchback, unkempt black hair, stubble, sharp eyes, and dark eye circles. He wears a black suit consisting of a black jacket, black pants, a grey collared shirt, and a black necktie. He carries four long swords known as Samurai Calibur Blades at his waist, which can combine into two larger swords. When drawn, the blades widen and feature serrated, mantis-like armor plating.

Personality

Socially reserved and awkward, Samurai Calibur speaks with a halting, mechanical cadence while avoiding direct eye contact, occasionally slipping into archaic samurai phrasing. He frequently expresses urgency about time and can act impulsively. Beneath his eccentric exterior lies a considerate nature; he thoughtfully encourages Rikka Takarada to express her feelings to Yuta Hibiki. He is a passionate cat lover who keeps a pet cat and enjoys visiting cafes, though he dislikes red bean paste. Although usually taciturn, he occasionally displays unexpected emotion, such as bursting into laughter upon seeing someone's moral growth.

Abilities

He possesses superhuman physical prowess and mastery of swordsmanship, capable of effortlessly leaping across tall structures while carrying multiple people. By invoking an access code, he enters the old computer Junk and transforms into the giant sword Gridman Calibur. In this weapon form, he delivers the fatal Gridman Calibur End technique and functions as the chest armor for Full Power Gridman. Additionally, he exhibits technical aptitude to interface directly with Junk, optimizing its software to enable communication with Gridman and executing recovery and standby routines for the hero.

Background

He initially appeared following Yuta Hibiki's loss of memory, monitoring him covertly around town. Though initially viewed with suspicion due to his uncanny appearance, he established himself as a vital ally during the attack of the Kaiju Devidadadan. Entering Junk Shop Aya, he modified the old computer Junk to optimize Gridman's capabilities. He subsequently joined the other Neon Genesis Junior High Students to guard both the town and the shop. During engagements with the Kaiju Anti, he employed tactical deceit, feigning defeat to await ambush opportunities.

Relationships

He serves as a reliable weapon and guardian for Yuta Hibiki and Gridman. He frequently interacts with Rikka Takarada, offering her advice on personal matters. Rikka's mother takes a strong liking to him, fondly addressing him as Cali-chan and regularly inviting him for home-cooked meals. Alongside Max, Borr, and Vit, he operates as part of the Neon Genesis Junior High Students. Regarding the Kaiju Anti, Samurai Calibur recognizes his true nature early on, granting him leniency in exchange for contact information and taking silent satisfaction in the boy's moral development.

Trivia

His name originates from Samurai Sword, the designation given to the Plasma Blade in Superhuman Samurai Syber-Squad, the American adaptation of the original Gridman series. His visual concept was created with instructions to combine the likenesses of musician Hiroji Miyamoto and comedian Hikari Ota. Additionally, the decorative accents on his suit were inspired by the Dinobot Slug from the Transformers franchise.
