Overview

Elizabeth is a mysterious alien creature and one of the iconic mascot characters in Gintama. Originally presented to Katsura Kotarou by Sakamoto Tatsuma as a pet, Elizabeth has evolved into Katsura's most trusted right-hand companion within the Jouishishi faction. Recognized alongside Sadaharu and Just We as a central symbol of the series, Elizabeth is famous for communicating almost exclusively through handwritten signboards rather than spoken dialogue.

Appearance

Elizabeth resembles a rounded white sheet or suit with a yellow, duck-like rubber beak and black eyes. Hairy human legs frequently protrude from beneath the lower hem, implying an old man inside. Throughout the series, Elizabeth puts on various disguises, such as a cosplay outfit based on Luigi. In Gintama: The Movie: The Final Chapter: Be Forever Yorozuya, Elizabeth assumes a realistically proportioned physique clad in full-body white tights while wielding an iron club.

Personality

Elizabeth is predominantly silent, maintaining an unreadable poker face while expressing thoughts through lightning-fast signboard writing. Despite a quiet demeanor, Elizabeth possesses a surprisingly sharp-tongued side and an unexpectedly gallant spirit. Deeply devoted to Katsura Kotarou, Elizabeth acts as an unwavering comrade, standing firm to protect allies regardless of how absurd the situation becomes.

Abilities

Despite a mild exterior, Elizabeth possesses high combat power and physical capabilities, including the strength to sprint while holding both Shimura Shinpachi and Kagura under each arm. Highly agile, Elizabeth can kick away incoming missiles and complete fine tasks like sharpening swords. Elizabeth's mouth functions as an arsenal, producing weapons such as samurai swords, rocket launchers, and drills for high-speed underground digging. Elizabeth also demonstrates supernatural speed when writing and swapping signboards.

Background

Elizabeth was originally Prince Dragonia, the first prince of the Oukoku Star and older brother to Prince Hata and Admiral Shizaku. After falling down a cliff and losing memory when a large crown horn became tangled in tree branches, Elizabeth eventually came into the hands of Sakamoto Tatsuma and was given to Katsura Kotarou. During the Renho arc, the Monday-shift Elizabeth named Eren departed for space, but the primary Elizabeth had merely been taking a vacation. In the Silver Soul arc, Elizabeth recalled the past as Dragonia and unified the Oukoku Star forces to aid Earth, ultimately choosing to remain as Earth's Elizabeth alongside Katsura.

Relationships

Elizabeth shares an unbreakable bond with master and partner Katsura Kotarou. Sakamoto Tatsuma is the benefactor who presented Elizabeth to Katsura. Kagura affectionately nicknames Elizabeth Elly, while Sakata Gintoki acknowledges Elizabeth's underlying charisma. Elizabeth forms a silent friendship with Saitou Shimaru of the Shinsengumi over signboards and notebooks. Prince Hata and Admiral Shizaku are long-lost younger brothers, and Elizabeth once dated a nurse named Uchino-san after she confessed her feelings.

Trivia

When eating, Elizabeth swallows food along with the bowl whole, later spitting out the empty container. As a flagship mascot of Gintama, Elizabeth appears on wide-ranging merchandise alongside Sadaharu and Just We. Live-action actor Yamada Takayuki attended stage greetings dressed inside the actual mascot costume. In the real world, a radar dome on a Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force vessel's close-in weapon system was once decorated by crew members to resemble Elizabeth.
