Overview
Umibouzu, whose real name is Kankou, is a major supporting character in the manga and anime series Gintama. Belonging to the formidable Yato clan, he is celebrated across the galaxy as an elite alien hunter responsible for exterminating high-threat extraterrestrial creatures. He is the father of Kagura and Kamui, as well as the devoted husband of the late Kouka. Operating throughout deep space, he maintains a distant yet protective watchful eye over his daughter's life on Earth.
Appearance
He is a middle-aged man characterized by round glasses, a small mustache, and a hairless scalp. In his younger years, he sported longer hair styled in a braid, and later had a sparse comb-over before losing his hair entirely. He possesses a prosthetic arm following a past injury, with a second prosthetic added after later battles. His standard equipment includes a large signature umbrella, and he is often seen wearing a cape, protective goggles, a riding helmet, and operating a motorcycle.
Personality
Despite his fierce reputation as a galactic warrior, he is a doting, overprotective father and a deeply devoted husband who was notoriously henpecked by his late wife. He is exceptionally self-conscious about his baldness, becoming instantly enraged at any perceived reference to hair loss. Though initially distrustful of outsiders, he possesses a protective, caring nature and develops deep respect for those who look after his daughter.
Abilities
As a member of the Yato clan, he possesses legendary superhuman physical strength, resilience, and combat prowess. He demonstrated combat abilities equal to Housen during a legendary three-day duel and can single-handedly overpower massive alien creatures and fleet forces. He wields a heavy, highly durable umbrella as both an offensive weapon and a shield capable of blocking heavy artillery. His decades of battlefield experience afford him exceptional tactical intellect and adaptability.
Background
He met his wife Kouka on the Yato homeworld of Kouan before leaving to raise a family across the stars. After losing his left arm in a clash with his son Kamui, who attempted to fulfill an ancient Yato tradition of patricide, he distanced himself from his household to suppress his violent instincts. Years later, he traveled to Earth to retrieve Kagura, but after witnessing her bond with Gintoki Sakata and the Yorozuya, he chose to respect her wish to stay.
Relationships
He was married to Kouka and is the father of Kagura and Kamui. Although initially hostile toward Gintoki Sakata and Shinpachi Shimura, he eventually entrusts Kagura's upbringing to the Yorozuya. Mutsu of the Kaientai is his former student, and he shared a long-standing acquaintance with her father. In the past, he held a fierce rival relationship with the Yato elder Housen.
Trivia
The character's visual and thematic design was inspired by Bardock from Dragon Ball. Within the story's universe, his battle with hair loss earned him a featured role as a commercial spokesperson for a hair growth product called Atlas NEO.
