Overview

The main protagonist of Gintama, Sakata Gintoki is a samurai who runs the Yorozuya odd-jobs agency in Edo's Kabukicho district. Although he was once a legendary warrior in the Joui War, he now spends his days as a lazy, unmotivated slack-off. Beneath his carefree demeanor lies an unwavering personal code of bushido. When his friends or home are threatened, he displays extraordinary resolve and strength, acting as a reliable core for those around him.

Appearance

He features messy silver naturally wavy hair and crimson, unexpressive eyes often described as looking like a dead fish's. His standard attire consists of a black shirt and matching pants under a white kimono patterned with light blue waves, draped casually over his left shoulder only. He wears black boots and keeps a wooden sword inscribed with "Touyako" at his waist. He drives a scooter featuring the character "Gin" on its wheel cover. During the Joui War, his hair reached over his ears, and he wore a white battle outfit.

Personality

Gintoki comes across as irresponsible, frequently wasting his money on gambling at pachinko and horse races, which leaves him constantly behind on rent and wages. He is an unabashed sweet tooth who craves sugar regularly and reads Weekly Shonen Jump without fail. He is curiously terrified of ghosts and dentists. Despite his flaws and nonchalant attitude, he possesses a deep sense of loyalty and compassion, willingly risking his life to uphold his values and protect those he holds dear.

Abilities

Famed as the "Shiroyasha," Gintoki is a master swordsman whose physical prowess allows him to overpower massive alien creatures and armored machinery with a single wooden sword. His weapon, inscribed as "Touyako," is actually a high-grade blade carved from a celestial tree on a distant planet, capable of cleaving metal and deflecting artillery shells. He possesses exceptional durability, speed, and rapid recovery rates, specializing in surprise attacks. However, losing his composure due to rage compromises his flexible tactical intellect.

Background

Orphaned at a young age, Gintoki survived by scavenging battlefields, earning the moniker "corpse-eating demon" before being taken in by Yoshida Shouyou to study at Shokasonjuku. Following his master's arrest, he joined the Joui War alongside his fellow disciples to fight against the Amanto, gaining renown as the feared "Shiroyasha." After the war ended in defeat and tragedy, he wandered until he met Otose. Grateful for her kindness, he swore to protect her and established the Yorozuya in Kabukicho.

Relationships

Gintoki shares a family-like bond with his Yorozuya employees, Shimura Shinpachi and Kagura. He owes immense gratitude to his landlady Otose, despite her constant demands for overdue rent. Katsura Kotarou and Takasugi Shinsuke are his former fellow students under Yoshida Shouyou and war comrades, sharing complex history with him. He also maintains ties with Sakamoto Tatsuma from their war days, as well as a fiery rivalry with Shinsengumi officer Hijikata Toushirou.

Trivia

His name and concept are inspired by Sakata Kintoki (Kintaro) from the historical folklore collection Konjaku Monogatarishu. Unlike typical shonen protagonists, Gintoki lacks a defined ultimate attack or special named technique and openly resists learning one. Additionally, his signature wooden sword inscribed with "Touyako" is actually purchased via home shopping networks rather than obtained through legendary means.
