Overview

Otose, whose birth name is Terada Ayano, is a prominent character in Hideaki Sorachi's manga and anime series Gintama. She operates Snack Otose, a small drinking establishment located in Kabukicho, and serves as the landlady for Sakata Gintoki, who rents the floor directly above her bar for his Yorozuya business. Recognized as one of the Four Devas of Kabukicho under the title of Empress Otose, she commands substantial respect throughout the district through her interpersonal connections and natural moral authority rather than brute force.

Appearance

Otose is presented as an elderly woman with heavy facial wrinkles, vivid lipstick, and a signature cigarette almost constantly held in her hand or mouth. She wears traditional Japanese clothing. In her youth, she was portrayed as a clean-cut beauty in a kimono, possessing a strong visual resemblance to Shimura Tae. Depending on the situation, she has been depicted wearing sunglasses, headwear, or displaying a style with one sleeve slipped off her shoulder.

Personality

Otose displays a sharp tongue and a stern exterior, frequently berating Gintoki over his endlessly delayed rent payments. Beneath her abrasive manner, however, she possesses an exceptionally warm heart and a strong sense of empathy for down-on-their-luck individuals. Though her compassionate nature has occasionally left her vulnerable to deceit, she accepts these risks as part of who she is. Despite her harsh shouting matches, she acts as a grounding, maternal anchor for those around her.

Abilities

Otose possesses no personal combat techniques or direct combat strength, nor does she lead a private arm or organization. Instead, her capability stems entirely from her broad social web, her elevated reputation in Kabukicho, and an innate ability to inspire and unite the townspeople during times of crisis.

Background

In her youth, she worked at a dango shop but was dismissed after repeatedly giving away food to impoverished children. She was courted by both her childhood friend Doromizu Jirocho and Terada Tatsugorou, ultimately marrying Tatsugorou, who later died in combat while protecting Jirocho. Years later, while visiting her husband's grave, she met a starving Sakata Gintoki and allowed him to eat the offerings left at the tombstone. Grateful for the gesture, Gintoki pledged to protect her in her late husband's stead, leading to their shared living arrangement. She later took in individuals with nowhere else to go, such as Catherine and Tama, giving them work and shelter at her bar.

Relationships

She serves as the landlady to Sakata Gintoki; despite constant arguments over his rent arrears, the two share a deep, unspoken bond of mutual protection. She provides a sense of home for his companions Shimura Shinpachi, Kagura, and Sadaharu. At her establishment, she employs Catherine, a reformed thief, and Tama, an android. Her deceased husband was Terada Tatsugorou, and she shares a long, complicated history with her childhood friend and fellow Kabukicho figure Doromizu Jirocho.

Trivia

Her character design and name draw inspiration from the historical Otose, the female proprietor of the Terada-ya inn during the late Edo period in Japan. In one notable gag episode of the animated adaptation, she and Catherine formed a parody duo referencing the magical girl genre.
