Overview
Tama, officially designated as Fuyou No. 0, is an android maid appearing in the manga series Gintama and its adaptations. Created by the inventor Hayashi Fuyou's father as a prototype, she carries the recorded personality data of his late daughter. After being rescued by the Yorozuya, she works as a dedicated employee at Otose's Snack House, serving as a beloved poster girl due to her devoted work ethic and charming appearance.
Appearance
Tama is a female android with long green hair styled in a single braid, red eyes, and a facial mark. She wears a japanese-style kimono maid outfit, a maid headdress, and headphones. Her hair is adorned with a screw hairpin given to her by Sakata Gintoki, and she carries a mop.
Personality
As an android, Tama is earnest, polite, and generally expressionless. Driven by a desire to be useful to humans, her mechanical stubbornness and lack of common sense often result in deadpan humor. However, she is developing subtle human emotions, such as finding joy in playing with children or admiring hardware store screws. She holds absolute trust in Sakata Gintoki and the Yorozuya.
Abilities
Tama possesses the unique ability to communicate with damaged machines to find failure causes and perform repairs. She also features an internal cooking mechanism that processes ingested ingredients inside her body and regurgitates them into oil-covered yet remarkably delicious meals. Modified by Hiraga Gengai, her equipment includes a mop equipped with a flamethrower, enabling formidable combat skills and virtual-reality manipulation features.
Background
Created by Dr. Hayashi Nagaryuu to store his sick daughter Fuyou's memory data, she escaped after being framed for murder. Reduced to a disembodied head, she was picked up from a trash heap by Kagura and brought to the Yorozuya. Although she was heavily damaged while resolving the Fuyou Project crisis—losing most of her stored data—she was reconstructed by Hiraga Gengai and began her new life working at Otose's bar.
Relationships
She was named 'Tama' by Kagura and shares a strong connection with the Yorozuya, standing alongside Sadaharu to support Sakata Gintoki when others were brainwashed by Sakata Kintoki. Otose treats her like a daughter, while Tama placidly handles harsh remarks from her coworker Catherine. Hiraga Gengai acts as her primary mechanic for repairs and combat upgrades.
Trivia
Her name 'Tama' originates from Kagura mistaking her disembodied head for an automatic egg-cracker when finding her. In various parody sequences, her communication is portrayed through retro Dragon Quest-style 8-bit graphics and text boxes. In the spin-off 3-Nen Z-Gumi Ginpachi-Sensei, she is depicted as a performing arts actress who later transfers into Class 3-Z.
